People's Reaction To your Decision To Relocate to the LOS

How did your family, friends, and coworkers react to you deciding to move to Thailand?

For me a few friends thought I was nuts, many said go for it and others wish they could have come with me.

As for family, all I have is my son. He loves Thailand and understands why I love it here (after he came for a few weeks!)

What was the reaction you got???

'How exciting', 'Good luck', 'Snigger snigger wink wink', 'Be careful', 'I'll come over and crash at your place then', 'Do it NOW', 'Take good care of yourself', 'What the fuck?', 'How are you going to support yourself', 'Isn't Phuket beautiful', 'I went to Sri Lanka last year and do you know what...'

    Etc.

No prob. Thai friends from the UK and some are married, so I had an already extended family over here (2nd cousins and all that). It was "nice one Jarv, don't end up in jail and don't bring them cnuts Tony Montana and Cantona". Anyway Beef Butties got me out of jail, though I never got any Mushy Peas back

    Good OP, Chi.

My mother and father and grandparents have always been supportive and encouraging, and positive. I started traveling at 23, fifteen years ago.

My friends are not very interested, but they think it's interesting and they ask questions about what it's like to live abroad. But many friends, don't really care, and are not interested. (I can certainly understand this.)

For the first couple of years me mum and pa, thought it was great, and they still do.

But now, as I get older, after several years overseas, they have mentioned about what I"ll do if I live to, say, 70.

Me papa told that I didn't have to come back to America. He said, "go to Africa," or wherever - but to get a real job.

I just came. I burned my bridges, never really said goodbye to any one and left. My decision and I didn't want anyone saying I told you so, if I failed. There's always someone wanting to stick the knife in.

I went to live in HK first. When I went there most people thought I was mad, particularly as it was just 3 years before the handover. When I moved here from HK, no-one was particularly bothered. To most of my family all of Asia is the same place.

^ Why not stay in HK NR as I think it's a far better place than here. I'm here because my family is here, before people start sniping.

I can't take 'my' son out of Thailand. If I could, I probably would have moved by now.

Not that one, but I met ex-hubby in HK & no matter how many times he told them different, his family were convinced I had to be Chinese & he was just lying to them.

Hmmmm......I left the UK to back-pack around the world. Told my family that I'd be back in about a year and a half.
Got to SE Asia and never got round to moving on. Got a job with my old company and stayed. Never planned on staying here, just one day I realised that I didn't know anyone back home and that I'd been here for most of my adult life.

Life sorta handed me a fait accompli. It wasn't planned at all.

I spent nearly my entire adult life with the Air Force in Japan. I went to live in the States for one year when I retired and my family seemed pretty happy. A few even came out to LA to visit. After a year, I decided to move to Thailand and most were dumbfounded. They couldn't quite get their heads around why someone would choose to live abroad. My parents visited Thailand last August and gave it mixed reviews. Nice to visit but could never live here.

None of my friends were intelligent enough to know where Thailand is.

^ I think you mean that none of them cared enough to concern themselves to learn about such an irrelevant country as Thailand. It really is a nice but irrelevant place.

I left Denmark when I was 21, I could have ended up anywhere, but it happened to be Thailand. Never got any comments from back home, but then again our family aint that big, and the friends were long gone, living there own life.
