    Two fucked-up popular Thaiophile beliefs

    1) The use of the word "farang" in Thai society is not derogitory.

The word farang is Thai for caucasian. Half a century ago, it was common for people of African descent living in or visiting the UK to be labelled as negros, or similar. The word was used to label these people as aliens with unusual features, strange customs, and limited rights. At the time, most of these immigrants probably accepted this label to avoid rocking the boat and upsetting their new host country. Since then, their descendents have been born in the UK, and are full UK citizens with full rights. And quite rightly, the labelling has since been recognised as offensive and quite unnecessary, and has been banished into historical ignorance.

It makes me sick to read certain spineless submissive Thaiophile wankers accepting their farang label in the same way over on 20dayajarnforum.net.

I have yet to see a Thai in the UK referred to in public chat as "mongoloid".

    2) Income tax is much lower in Thailand than Western countries.

In fact, the only thing that is much lower is the average level of wages. If you earned 100 pounds per week in the UK or $200 per week in the US, you'd only pay around 3% income tax too.

Yes, we know that Smeg, but how much would it cost you to service your motorbike?
More than 70 baht I'd expect.
How much to get a bloke out to fix your freezer?
More than 50 baht i would imagine.

It depends on how the word "Farang" is used.

Taxes? I don't care. It's not that much.

In the US, it's robbery. In the US you pay high taxes on federal, state, local, sales, property, car, bubble gum, Social Security (13.%) for what?

I'm sorry to hear you've been sick smeg, fortunately Thailand has no shortage of Pharmacies where, if your smart, and i know you are, you can buy the correct medication at a fraction of the price of what you'd pay in the west.

yep, i get a throat infection here and it costs me 60 baht for Amoxyillin 500 mgs, if I had to get the same treatment back home it's a $25 doctors consultation and then $16 for the chemist.
Now what about catching a dose?

    Tax!
Basic aussie wage is taxed at 20-25%. I get a similar wage here to what I was on at home but pay 4%!
    how's that work out Smeg?

Anyway, as a spineless submissive Thaiophile wanker I'm more than happy to be referred to as a farang. I remember the nightmare that an asian had to suffer in Australia (slopehead!, chink!) etc and I'm pleased to be in a civilised country for a change.

Nice to see you back Smeg!

    Smeg:

My math is really bad so maybe you can help me out here.

The highest personal income tax bracket in the UK is 40% and the threshold amount (for 2005-06) is GBP 32,400 (circa. 2.2 million)

The highest personal income tax in Thailand is 37% and the threshold amount (for 2005-2006) is THB 4,000,000 (circa. GBP 58,800).

Now, which system would you prefer to be taxed under?

    I think that was funny.

    As for farang, the word
Farang (Thai , sometimes pronounced falang or falong, is the generic Thai word for a white foreigner It is closely related to the Khmer word Barang
it has no negative connotations as such.

Most Thais do not have their funerals in a ball park.

In the country they have cremation areas, in the town they use the temple facilities

Yes, almost true. As I said it actually means white foreigner

Half a century ago, it was common for people of African descent living in or visiting the UK to be labelled as negros, or similar.

    True.

The word was used to label these people as aliens with unusual features, strange customs, and limited rights.

This is where Smegs nonsense starts. It was a word to describe black people (negro means black, in Spanish and other languages). There was nothing in the word to denote customs or rights.

Partly true. It was the term niggers that became unacceptable. Negro is just assumed to be rude as the term nigger was derived from it.

It makes me sick to read certain spineless submissive Thaiophile wankers accepting their farang label in the same way over on 20dayajarnforum.net.

Now we get ot the real Smeggery! His usual rant against people who enjoy living in Thailand. The word farang is used as a general description of white foreigners, and is used by most of the white community to describe themselves. There are even magazines for foreigners using the word in their title

I have yet to see a Thai in the UK referred to in public chat as "mongoloid".

Yes, and it will never happen as that adjective is incorrect!! Thais are not mogoloid in features or customs. Mongolia is a long way away.
I have heard them described as SE Asians, or even Thais.

I agree with Smeg on this point - the word 'Farang' can be mildly insulting.

It's okay for use on the street but when it's in a work environment and you're being refered to in this way then it is disrespectful.

I liken it to calling a Welshman a 'Taffy' or a Scotsman 'Jock' - these terms are more like nicknames really but only in the appropriate circumstances.

To just say to a random Scotsman in the street 'hey Jock' could be asking for trouble and it would definitely be seen as 'taking the piss' (especially if you were not Scottish yourself)

If I ever refer to myself as a 'farang' in front of my students they laugh WITH each other knowing that I am taking the piss out of MYSELF.

This 'farang' magazine is only so-called as it is marketed towards the backpackers who still think of this word as a term of endearment and thus more willingly make the purchase.

Being called 'farang' is similar to calling a Thai 'chinky' although not as harsh.
