Its probably a "prevention is better than cure" approach. Its cheaper for the imm police to not have to pay out bounties, so maybe they are hoping that some offenders will find legal jobs or leave the country this month.

Luckily he doesn't know where I live or work, but you are right, life is cheap here.

well , he was a friend enough for you to hang out with him and lend him your phone. You obviously did consider him a friend.

maybe you had better make some "friends" amongst the bargirls, and you may find they are more reliable and honest.

    or maybe not

You may be right, but this was the first and last time I went drinking with him. As it was, he only paid for one round of four rounds of drinks we bought, and bored me senseless telling me about his smuggling runs to Myanmar, and about how clever he was for not having to pay income tax for his job in Thailand (and advised me to try to do the same), so I wouldn't have met him again anyway (maybe he knew that, so nicked me phone!)

Yeah, pretty dumb. I went to 7/11 for the Chang, he didn't like it so he bought Sing next time, I didn't like that so bought Leo. Then came the 4th round and he insisted that he had bought the last one, so I went again, and I think I bought tiger coz they had run out of Leo. (I knew that he hadn't but wasn't gonna argue over 90 baht)

    What a wierdo.
I could understand if he was Jewish in Europe during WW2 but Thailand teaching. The guy needs to be deported for excess paranoia.

If the bounty was high enough I suppose it could be an earner but I think the bounty on Smeg's head would be higher. No shortage of willing donors to that cause!

    ^agreed on both points.
I tried to get him to write to Dear Poolie to clear up his problems. In the end he went back state-side.

Erm.. the 7/11 isn't a bar you know, you could buy a load and stick 'em in the fridge.

That's the first time I've ever heard of people buying ronds in a 7/11, takes all kinds, don't it...

yes, "no planning for the future" springs to mind!

anyway Smeg, if you know the phones reg number you could blacklist it so it cannot be used (can they do that in Thailand?). It gets done to stolen phones in the UK

Nice idea, but we were sat outside, the 7/11 was less than a minute away, and his place was on the 14th floor (and probably no fridge, didn't find out).

I only bought the two Changs because he didn't offer me any money when I went to the 7/11, and I wasn't funding his night's drinking. I've been caught like that before.

well, it makes the phone worthless, so then he would be more likely to return it (having found it under the bed)

^ Good point, but he may have been straight down to MBK with it in December. (hence this is a bit cruel on the new owner)

    Possible, but too risky.
It won't guarantee me getting me money, and the guy was practising with his ninja stars for about an hour of that evening in December (mainly on a tree, but a couple of soi dogs had a lucky escape!)
