Will there be a military coup?

Fresh off the success of my Thaksin will be out by Sunday thread, I now pose the question:

"will there be a military coup before the end of March 2006."

Remember ladies and gents, the opposition is saying they'll boycott and today Thaksin is saying there's no point having an election if the opposition are not going to play ball. Seems like we may be close to a stand-off. But, will the military come in a say "enough's, enough". Or are those days behind us?

He wants to meet all the military leaders, so I assume he will just buy them off.

GoW mentioned in another thread today that dtox has called a meeting a top brass today

guess he wants to make sure that the money he's paid is enough to ensure their loyalty

I'm with William on this one

Army chief denies asking Thaksin to resign

Army Commander-in-Chief General Sonthi Boonyaratklin Wednesday dismissed news reports that he had suggested for embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to resign in order to end the political turmoil.

“There were no such talks at the lunchoen table on Tuesday,” Sonthi said.

The reports quoting an unnamed source as saying that one of the top military commanders told Thaksin to step down during the working lunch at Government House.

The lunch took place amid rumours about possible military coup.
    source: The Nation

Once again, things are looking mighty interesting (my bold above)...

Interestingly, the BBC are now reporting about Coup rumours circulating in Thailand

A few parallels with the Philippines where Gloria is under increasing pressure.

I don't think it'll go that far, not after all the trouble of the last time. I personally think Thaksin will stay in power for a while yet and have even bet two bottles of white whiskey on it.

^ not saying you are wrong, because I think Thaksin will remain in power (as TRT) - just not under the name "Thaksin". That name will walk the wilderness for a few years and make a storming come back, circa. 2008.

Yep, I think even if Thaksin steps down, and TRT stay in power he will still be one of the most powerful political figures in this country behind the scenes.

To me, one of the most interesting facts about the current stand-off is the fact that if you have ever heard one of HM's speeches you'll know that he could hardly be called a Thaksin fan. Yet, he is now Thaksin's "last card", as Thaksin is on record as saying he won't go unless asked to do so by HM.

With effectively all of Thaksin's support eroded, the only major player not to have declared a position on this current situation is HM. And I have a feeling Thaksin is playing this last card well, knowing that if HM does come out and say something too early, he can say somethin along the lines of "well he never really liked me in the first place."

Whatever, it all makes interesting reading into the Thai way of thinking

HM will not get involved unless theres a violent coup I think, so wise for Thaksin to make that move.

    WASSANA NANUAM

Caretaker Defence Minister Thammarak Isarangkura na Ayudhaya yesterday held an urgent meeting with top military leaders to discuss security measures for two major rallies today and Sunday and warned them against staging a coup. Present at the meeting at army headquarters were permanent secretary for defence Gen Sirichai Tunyasiri, supreme commander Gen Ruangroj Mahasaranont, army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin, navy chief Adm Sathiraphan Keyanont, air force chief ACM Chalit Phukphasuk and national police chief Pol Gen Kowit Wattana.
