Will Thaksin be gone by Sunday?

My money is on Thaksin having either resigned or dissolved parliament before this Sunday's coming political rally.

A bold statement? Perhaps, but things are moving quickly and it looks like his days are numbered. Possibly the bigger question, will we have a coalition government or military generals as our lord and masters in the second half of 2006...?

Foregoing the second comment, do you see Thaksin being the Big Chief come Monday morning?

He has publicly stated that he will only resign IF HM King asks him to.

Otherwise he has this misguided notion that everybody loves him and he can do no wrong.

The guy is a real meglomaniac.

I think the only other way he could go is if there is "blood on the streets" at next Sunday's rally. Thats what bought down the PM in '92, but lets all hope and pray that it does not come to that.

I do not think that it was pure co-incidence that when the last rally was held in Bangkok 3 weeks ago that he was strategically placed in his stronghold of Chaing Mai should things have gone wrong then, ready to swiftly flee the country!

However there is absolutley NO WAY he will be re-elected. To be honest if a scandal like the Shincorp one had happenede in any Western Country the PM would have been long gone by now

I think he's very unlikely to quit, far too much ego.
More likely is that he'll dissolve Parliament and take his chances on his popularity, maybe give lots of money to villagers and the likes.

He has publicly stated many things before either doing a complete U-turn or nothing at all.

That being said, I think he'll still be PM come Monday morning.

I really don't know if he will be gone by Monday as I am not in Thailand, but I know this Thai guy that is connected all the way to the top of the government. In 2002 he was a Thaksin supporter, in 2004 he said that Thaksin was crazy (his words), I think he will be gone soon.

I must admit, I am more inclined to believe that he'll dissolve parliament than resign. Speaking to one person today, they told me they thought he would resign and spend a few years in the wilderness before returning. When I asked why they thought that, the response was that he had already done that once before, as Deputy PM. Made me think...

One of the interesting signs will be this afternoon's conference at the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). Indicators following this may lead to something bigger.

One things for sure, his losing support by the hour at the moment.

Maybe, but I think next time the country might be careful enough to choose someone with fewer conflicts of interest.

Unfortunately the only conflict Thais think about when voting is who's paying the most money.

    Unhappy

I don't have any faith in electors; look at what the so called politically aware west have done recently. GWB and little Johnny Howard got in on landslides.

I think a lot of the Thais used to like him cos he was or is so rich, they thought he wouldn't be corrupt.

If anyone was naive enough to think T&Co. wasn't corrupt should have asked why its was that so many countries were signing contracts with Shin Sat for the use of iPSTAR about 48 hours after Thaksin, who was not in any way related with the company, had just left following an "official" visit.

All the way back to 1989 buying mobile phones abroad for 200 dollars then bringing them in and selling them for 2500 dollars. Nice way to treat your fellow countrymen.

My opinion is that when Thais complain of corruption, it is more that they have been denied an opportunity to join those at the trough than any desire to end it.

Under john howard's regime in australia ministers and government have adopted the sergeant schultz defence-"I know nothing".
As a fan of hogans heroes, having grown up in the sixties this was very funny.
I read recently that both klink and shultz are jews and that klink was in a concentration camp as a child.
    Makes one think.....

A recent discussion in my home went like this. Condensed version.

Me: Do you think he will go or stay?
    Her: Go.
    Me: Why?
Her: He is corrupt. He made B73 million recently.
Me: Impossible, it is not his company anymore, his maid and driver own the company. You guys said it was okay.
    Her: Falangs, not understand.
