Bombs in Narathiwat - Will there be bombs in Bangkok tonight?

31 people injured in explosions at two discotheques in Narathiwat

Narathiwat - A series of explosions happened at two discotheques in this southern border province early Monday, injuring 31 people.

Police said insurgents apparently used timing device to detonate a bomb each inside the discotheques.

Panicked patrons and employees of the discotheques ran out to be injured by more explosions outside, police said.

The first attack happened at the Riviera Hotel at the 4 am and the second attack at Marina Hotel. Both hotels are located in Narathiwat's Muang district.

Insurgents planted time bombs in certain motorcycles, which shortly exploded after the explosions in the discotheques.

Most of those, who were injured, were patrons trying to retrieve their motorcycles to flee the scenes.

    Hey, it's gonna be safe

Police, soldiers to beef up security in Bangkok

The Army, Navy and Air Force will assist the Metropolitan Police to beef up security in Bangkok on New Year's Eve.

Pol Col Piyaphan Pingmuang, deputy spokesman of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the Air Force would deploy its personnel to keep security in northern Bangkok and the Army in central Bangkok while the Navy would help monitor the situation on the Thon Buri side.

The Metropolitan Bureau would deploy one company of police to watch over 38 venues where the New Year celebrations will be held on New Year's Eve, he said.

He said 19 areas would be under special close watch, including Central World.

Don't worry about bombs, worry about morons on the road

New Year's road accident death toll rises to 188 after 3 days

The death toll from road accidents in the first three days of the so-called seven dangerous days of New Year break rose to 188, the Road Safety Centre announced Monday.

Chaisawt Kittipornpaibool, permanent secretary for Transport, said a total of 1,965 road accidents occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, seeing 188 people killed and 2,131 others injured.

The number of accidents was 47 or 2.45 per cent higher that that of last year and the death toll was 9 or 5.03 per cent higher than that from the same period of last year.

Khon Kaen and Nakhon Pathom had the highest death toll so far, each of 11.

Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Surin and Nakhon Pathom had the highest number of road accidents of 69, 68, 66 and 65 respectively.
