Designated Seating

Does anyone know what the deal is here?

I was travelling on the BTS yesterday and there were as many people standing as seated. I was stood in front of a healthy middle aged woman who was occupying a seat designated for monks. I could also see an elderly monk standing in the doorway. This poor old guy was well into his 60's and in real discomfort. I politely drew the woman's attention to this (I simply nodded to her in the monk's direction) and was presented with a mouthful of abuse about how women were entitled to sit wherever they wanted. Jeez this was nothing to do with the guy being a monk, it was about being human. This poor old fella looked like he was going to collapse.

So much for caring about the elderly here. So the monks are only respected if they don't get in the way.....

Maybe if the monk had spouted a few lucky lottery numbers he would have got a seat.

In Singapore you will see most of the local monks driving cars.

They also eat in expensive restaurants but will usually get a private room so regular people don't have to see where their donation money is going to.

Mind you I imagine the Catholic priests etc here do the same thing but they are a bit more difficult to spot as they have hair and don't wear robes and that.

i think we can all recall instances where certain individuals were not as gracious as they could be, and it happens everywhere.

At least the Thais aren't discriminating. They treat old Thais just as badly as old Farangs. This is the second example I have seen of such treatment in a matter of days and it saddens me to see old people distressed.

yea its all about manners is,nt it? they did a show here on it useing a pregnant chick and public transport,sad to say it was mostly women who got off their arses for her, i don,t use public transport and i,m afraid i would lose my lolly if i saw some arseole not get up for the elderly or infirmed, i mean its not hard to figure out is it?

I don't give my seat up for children, and I don't necessarily do so for old folk either as I appreciate they have their pride, as old Peter Pan has mentioned, but where someone is clearly in distress I consider it to be a simple act of humanity. Just a moment's eye contact will tell you if the person needs your seat.

I also offer my seat to adults carrying young children, although in Memock's case I might be inclined to break wind first.

I was bemused to see two Thai lads in their teens give up their seats for two girls of similar age once. Didn't get them anywhere.

6 years ago, pregnant wife standing in BTS, monk in the monks seat and two Thai lads sitting beside him.
One realises that he should give up his seat to wifey, so the one next to the monk jumps up offering his seat, wife is frozen, I said take the seat, she doesn't move, the women in the carriage all recognise her predicament and jump up to offer their seats.
All the time the monk is sitting there with a wry grin on his face.
Then the other lad catches on and slides across next to the monk, wife takes his seat. Everyones happy.

Just another nasty self centered bitch oblivious of anyone but herself. People like this are found in all cultures. I have on many occasions seen young Thais give up their seats to the elderly, monks and pregnant women so there is hope for the country.

Its even worse when 12 years ago in the young waitress working Parkroyal Sydney asked me wether I had a pensioner discount card. At that time I was 17 years away from qualifing for one.

If I want to sit down I just pull some **** off his seat and make it mine. Then stare at him while grinding my teeth, pulling my hair and slapping my face. Usually they accept it and kinda move away... and I get a nice comfy seat to sit on for the rest of me journey. Sweet.

Only caring about myself sure does ensure I'm always pleased. Great way to be..

Not quite designated seating, but here's another similar offring.

Yesterday on the BTS again the train was prety much full with many people standing when a woman entered carrying a baby. Sure enough a young lady stood up to offer her seat whereupon a Thai man, roughly 35 y/o took the seat, in the full knowledge of why the girl had stood up. He just sat grinnng through the rest of the journey, as though he had just done something clever.

Sadly this sort of behaviour is confused with intelligence amongst the locals at times. I pity his buffalo, they must get some rough treatment.

The young lady did not get up if there was a lady sitting beside here

Having enquired into this I agree this is the problem in the original situation.

It would not have been sufficient for the woman to give up her seat. Those either side of her would have had to also, and men would then have had to take their places thereby creating some absurd kind of "musical chairs" involving the entire row of seats.

I don't think Thailand will be building nuclear power stations anytime soon if this is what it takes to give up a seat.
