Coup d'etat and other rumors you have heard

Was talking with some taxi drivers today and they said that Taksin will soon be back and to expect violence in the next few months. One said there is for sure going to be a coup d'etat and this time it will not be pretty.

Anyone heard of similar such rumors?

^Well everyone seems to think Taksin will be back, probably because they're voting for his proxies.

^ The "Walking ATM Machine," former prime minister Banharn Silpa-archa, heads the mid-sized Chart Thai party, which is likely to be courted by the two top parties as they vie to form a coalition government after the election. He may even be offered the prime minister post again, in return for his party's support.

    This bit made me chuckle

"The vertically challenged Banharn inspired a frequent quip: "It doesn't matter that Thailand's prime minister is so short, because he just does all deals under the table."

Yep, that seems to be how people expect things to happen down here. PPP win election (largely due to Isaan vote). All charges are dropped against Thaksin, he comes back. About August/September a coup that will make the last one look like a playground argument. Not totally unbelievable, is it?

There will be no coup! The reason for the last coup had nothing to do with ousting Thaksin for corruption. Thaksin was no more corrupt than all his predecessors, IMO much less so. With the TRT firmly in control of parliament with 375 seats the TRT had no need to share their ill gotten gains with the rest of the parties. For the first time in history, Thaksin had the gall to take direct control and approval of all military budgets. Budget requests for new fighter airplanes, submarines and the like were often disapproved. The combination of having created these two strong enemies set the stage for Thaksin's and TRT's downfall via the coup. I'm sure the PPP has assured the military they will face little or no opposition when they want more toys for boys and as it always has been, members of other political parties will be "taken care of" as well.

Thaksin will return, all corruption charges are dropped due to "insufficient evidence" the 111 former TRT members are pardoned, the Army stays in their barracks and all live happily ever after.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

If it sends the baht down, all the better.

I also heard a rumour that if the Democrats get in, they will extend foreign land leases to a maximum of 90 years.

I think yje little cvnt he was the most corrupt of the totally corrupted, remember that deal his daughter did ? she picked up a nice bit of land for pocket money, soon after that it was brought for a big sum for the new note printing facility. From memory she pocked a gain of 400 Mill
No matter how much money thes greedy pricks they have, its never enough.

PPP has strong support base in Isaan for sure but I noted the other day, the Dems are running around up here saying the same thing the PPP (TRT) has been saying for years. Vote for us and we will give you just as much as the PPP (TRT). Seems the Dems have finally learned from Khun Thaksin how to get the Isaan vote they need to win. Suddenly all the parties are spouting the "populist" line. Had one of those obnoxious pickups come through the village amplifier on full blast with a recording telling everyone how much better off they will be if they vote for the Dems. Problem is the Dems haven't quiet got it yet as the recording was in Thai and all the villagers were looking at each other with puzzled looks.

I can't see Thaksin coming back. There's just no way certain people here could accept it. He may come into the the coutnry again but he will never be the prime minister or lead the people. To think that he is just going to jump back in and everything is going to work again is absolutely ridiculous. I'd say he's a marked man if gets involved in politics again. All that happened over the past year is not going to be wasted and there are plenty of powerful people in the background to make sure that it isn't.

But Thaksin may not be able to see the truth. That's why the coup happened in the first place.

I bet he'll stay in England. He may come back then go back to England. Thailand is a mess and he probably can live happily without it.

Agree. He will not become PM again but I do think he will be allowed to return without much complaint from the Thai public. We shouldn't underestimate his influenece on the leadership of Thailand however. I watched an interview with Samak head of the PPP party. He was asked if he was Thaksin's nominee for the leadership of PPP and with no hesitation, he responded with a "yes".

He's got it made over here.

Until City have a bad run, then we'll make his life hell by chanting insults about He Who Can't Be Insulted right through the whole match - let's see him showing his Thai mates those games

Why confine it to the world's greatest empires, what about Emperor Palpatine or the Padishah Emperors, there's a whole imperialist universe out there, you know?

Its likely that the next elected government will end in chaos whether its PPP or a Democrat led coalition. The generals, backed by the corrupt ruling class elite will be waiting in the wings to seize back power in the name of peace and national unity once again. They will once again go about stacking the judiciary with their cronies, passing laws to entrench their power and manipulating elections until they get the government they want under the guise of democracy.
