Is the old textbased forum on its way out?

    New social media.

Textbase forums, like TD, TV etc. have been around for ages now, but take a look at this new place
called www.seesmic.com, Seesmic dot you know what, if links are not allowed around here.

The site is still in pre beta but functioning quite well and it requires an invitation,
a WebCam and a microphone to gain access to it.

Really quite an interesting experience, most definitely a place not for camera shy tongue tied people
nor probably for anybody wanted by the authorities.
It really has been fun and a great experience, a real eye opener, in the true sense of the word.
You see who's talking to you, they see who is replying to them.
This also cuts down on a lot of the nastiness and no moding required.
Get to speak to/with people all over the world, in just about as
many languages, and could be very good for networking and business.

What are sorely missing are Gents from Southeast Asia. Got Merkins, Poms,
a Welsh or two, some Scousers, plenty of down under crims, all flavors of Europeans
and a paddy, but only lonesome me from Southeast Asia for now.

No more typing, no more perfunctory one-liners, no more stupid emoticon replies.
Plenty of tech savvy helpful punters, and a lot of nice people!

Wanna join in da fun? Make sure you have a WebCam and a microphone and I still have got a
few, free of course, invites to give out.
PM me if interested ... and no, I have no vested intere$t in the place
(being just a beta tester) save for seeing some familiar SE Asia nicks over thar!
tell'em gonelive sent you ... wink wink ... just joshin!

Sounds too much like real life. I like the anonymity of a text based forum.

Can't see many of this raggle taggle gathering of crooks and miscreants being very interested in having their ugly, wanted by the police and mothers of their children being interested.

Here we can read old threads, check out peoples travels and photos.
Can't do that on this new type. Seems to me that they are two completely different things and are not in competition with each other.

So this is a place where people can log in with a cam/mic combo and "post" a comment, right? Does it require any local software? Without a cam hooked up I'm not going to attempt to go through the sign up process.

But if I am interpreting the hoopla right this is basically similar to a video conferencing where the video is sent across the wire live then recorded on the server as a "post?"

I may not be understanding it correctly but if this is the case it may have applicability in some cases, going to require a helluva net presence to handle the traffic, processing and storage.

The Google search engine deals with text. there are 1000s of machines world wide to handle crawl, index storage and look up tasks along with the clustering of all local machines and remote sites add real-time audio/video recording and storage to the mix; it's gonna get intense. Then you'll need some kind of moderation to screen the videos.

I think the application (software) is a good thing that can be useful in some ways but as far as taking it to the level of text-based forums? A poor use of the technology and one I see that could only be hosted or implemented by corporations with large amounts of $$$.

These corporations generally want to see $$$$$$$ back for their $$$ investments. Nope the text based forum will be around for quite a while yet. Anyway, who wants to watch some fool hem and haw, um and uh, all thwe while picking his ear while making a post?

Should add that most of those in Asia are probably sitting in their underwear while on the forum, not sure how marmite gets away with it at his work though.

you can too, got plenty of link possibilities to show off your pics, strut your stuff and much more.

difficult to say if one can or can't, if you have not tried it out and you could not have done so without an invite
it's a tad difficult to judge without trial

They are not in competition at all, more of a no contest situation actually. Forums are more like 1986 BBs albeit more advanced vs. web 2.0 apps like Seesmic.

this sounds like the kind of technology that i am against.

a bit like those 3G video phones where your boss or your wife can see exactly where you are.

555 DD I know you are camera shy (TD policy yes?)
You hit the nail on the head, that's how I post but just show the face,
nevertheless it's great fun, it's instant and very addictive and if I was looking for cyber revenue I'd be putting my money there and not in static text apps.

YouTube - Should Seesmic join Google Open Social bandwagon ?
An example of what could be compared to a "thread?" Discussion of Seesmic's future; to join or not to join Google.
if Google's offering money to these guys they should take it, go sit on a beach somewhere.
A prime example of why geeks should be heard and not seen.

its a flash based app, no download required, cam a must,
no sign-ups, it's in beta invite only,
I got some just because I told them that US and EU were asleep when I was on line and I had only down under drongos to talk to... so they relented

there are about just 2k users now, waiting list in the 10k

right you are pointing out servers and moderation probs once the floodgates are open, but they'll cope, YouTube did and prolly Sesmic will become just another spoke in the google wheel, once the offering$ are right

I tried Paltalk. Actually downloaded it from a free shareware and freeware site. You have to pay to talk more than a few seconds though...but you can listen. Only problem is, whoever is the moderator does most of the talking and you have to listen to his/her opinions, whether you agree with them or not.

Seesmic is nothing like Paltalk or Skypecast.

but What amazes most, Told Stool, is the level of conservatism a priori of many punters here
