Thread: Soi Dog Tales

One of the most endearing features of this country, IMHO is the soi dogs.

The latest of many amusing experiences is this offering..

There is a Basset bitch in my area plus several younger dogs of various shapes and sizes which bear some semblance of Basset hound in them. One of her offspring is a dog with the typical Basset short legs, the strong curled tail, but a head and body clearly belonging to something larger.

A couple of weeks ago the poor fella was attempting to "mount" a regular sized bitch. He'd got his forelegs up onto her back but every attempt to complete the exercise resulted in him falling off. It was funny to watch but I do feel terribly sorry for him. Still there are a few poodles in the area.......

Meanwhile, more than a year ago I was walking past a couple of dogs I had seen many times. One dog always barked at me whilst the other remained quiet. On this one occasion the aggressive one was busy eating, with his nose in a large bag and the passive one barked at me. I tstopped and stared at hm whereupon he tuned his head a full 180 degrees to look at the other dog, as if to say, "He put me up to it". LOL.

Soi dogs remind me of gang-land, America, without the 9's and the mac 11's.

One of my favourite soi dog memories is yet another Basset, but a 100% male this time who resides in the general area near the entrance to Lad phrao, soi 17. I was sitting in a beer bar one evening with TheMadBaron(the bar has since closed) when in walked the little fella (he was a regular in the bar) carrying his own bag of somtam. He promptly sat down inside the bar, broke open his little bag and digested the contents. I just cracked up at the sight of a dog bringing his own food to a bar that actually sells its own food.

Oh and there was a dog on Sukhumvit, near soi 10, that used to wear a Thai Soccer team shirt, number 14. Haven't seen him for a while and have been awaiting an announcement from Sven as to whether the dog was snapped up on his recent visit.

^I like the way the Thais put shirts on their favourite soi dogs when the weather gets cooler. Really sweet.

I've never seen that

^ Gets cooler down here Dec & early Jan & you see all these soi dogs in kiddies' t-shirts.

Dogs have fur coats

I bet they wonder WTF people are doing?

My Albanian neighbour gave his dog a jumper & I told him all the other dogs would think it looked stupid, so he took it off

^I put t-shirts on the more vulnerable dogs (pups, sick, no hair) in the center this time of year, too. It's not too bad at the moment, but it can get quite cool at night.

Quite cool?

They have a bloody fur coat, built-in

^ I've become very Thai in my thinking (& internal thermostat). Got my littl'un wearing long sleeves & going to school in a denim jacket at the moment, too.

It's -2 round here tonight.

You lot don't know what 'quite cool' means anymore.

Are there any decent bars in the area? I've not seen any yet, but I've not checked out Ballet yet.

I had another soi dog drama yesterday evening.

Our male soi dog Jim, the chemo patient, who has been doing really well after his last bout of chemo and then a life threatening infection because of his immune system being compromised by the chemo, was not to be found at feeding time last night.

I went back out a bit later calling him and he was lying on the road looking very sorry for himself. When he got up, he has this enormous gash on the front of his foot and it is swollen to about three times its size.

I had to bribe a taxi driver with 200 baht to take he and I to the vets about half a mile away.

OK by popular demand, another story.

On the same walk where I used to see the two dogs mentioned above, I would pass by a motorsai taxi rank where a fat old brown dog would always bark at me. Well, after about six months or so I walked past one day and the dog didn't bark, so I stopped, barked at the dog, poiunted to myself and shouted, "Farang" at which the dog stood up, let out one solitary bark, and sat down again. The motorsai drivers were in fits of laughter.

Tne we went to was the best bar around and that one closed. Probably too good for the locals. There is a karaoke bar in soi 35 if you're up for a laugh.

Ah, it used to be called "Bali". LOL Now I know where you mean. I was living in soi 35/2 in those days.

Marmite wants to know where to find the dogs on Lad Phrao. There's another tacky karaoke place opened just opposite Soi 35/1 now, plenty of dogs hanging about outside that one.

Just remembered one from my days in Nonthaburi. I saw this episode whilst waiting in a traffic jam.

A street food vendor had clearly tired of a dog that kept coming up to his stall and threw one of his sandals at the dog. Dog clearly thinks this is a game, picks up sandal and runs off to hide it.... then returns without sandal to pester the stallholder. Stallholder picks up remaining sandal as though to strike the dog and the dog simply looks at him as if to say, "yes, yes, OK but you still haven't found the first one yet".
