    Is Bangkok Stickman a twat?

For fans of the naughty bars, and especially guys about to fly in, get ready for one hell of a shock to the system. You very well might feel an urge to make an 11th hour change to your holiday plans. Strong rumours have it that bars will be prohibited from selling alcohol and in all likelihood closed on the 13th, 14th and 15th of this month *IN ADDITION* to the election days the following weekend which will definitely see the bars closed, the 22nd until the 24th. On election weekend, there will be no alcohol available from 6 PM on the 22nd, until 6 PM on the 24th. This utter madness would essentially knock out two full weekends of partying in the second busiest month for tourism of the year! And to make matters even worse it has been mooted that there will be heavy-handed enforcement including, get this, jail time for any establishments of any description selling alcohol and 6 MONTHS JAIL TIME FOR ANYONE CAUGHT DRINKING! Tourists' enjoyment is obviously of no major concern to the authorities. To make matters worse still, getting conformation from any authority is impossible and things remain unclear. In typical local style, we won't know for sure until the last minute. As soon as I know one way or the other exactly what days the bars will be open and what days they will be shut, I will put a notice up on the front page of the site.
I mean does this seem like really dumb?

rumours have it that bars will be prohibited from selling alcohol and in all likelihood closed on the 13th, 14th and 15th of this month

So where do these rumours come from then Mr Stick?

6 MONTHS JAIL TIME FOR ANYONE CAUGHT DRINKING
Foking hell, the greatest troll in the world is out there, he must be proud of this one, wonder if stick really believes this shite?

getting conformation from any authority is impossible and things remain unclear
Ermmm, so where do these rumours come from then sticky? some slapper you were porking a few nights ago down Soi Cowboy? Did you just dream this up? Did some bored farang bar owner dream this up?

He is definitely full of shit

This week's blog The Serious Business Of Fixing Your Bitterness is all about how he fears Thais and tha you should spend your time in Thailand walking on eggshells because all Thais know where to hire assassins to kill people who piss them off and all farangs are clueless

There is a thread about it on thai360

    - Thai360 - Powered by FusionBB

And here is one of the posts copied from the thread.

In response to Neo - December 15 & 16 Bar closing

This is from a mail out by a bar that is normally open (somewhere) when all else is closed

We (and all other bar and restaurant owners) have an official Police letter stating (bars) will be closed from 14-16 inclusive and restaurants can open but no booze...if caught 6 months jail for owner and 6 months for anyone caught drinking...well we all know this in Thailand and bars will open etc but this time it may be a bit tricky.........

Also remember it is also illegal (and the same laws apply) to hold a private party even if if is without booze. Give away booze and it is seriously illegal. An election or two ago a private party held by a group of farangs in private property (no where near a bar) was busted and they were all threatened with jail.
It looks like there is a very serious attitude to this one. It is very unusual to get such long notice to a bar closing. I would tread very carefully.
Me I have booked to Angeles. I am now going a week early. If Thailand does not want my money somebody else may as well get it!

But they do, they just go down their local police station only kidding

So if all Thais Know where to hire an assasin that either means a great percentage of the Thai population are assasins, or, that assasins advertise themselves on local media like tv and radio stations, lets look at it being a great percentage of Thais being assasins as I don't think even here in Thailand they would be allowed to advertise their services, so not taking into account that little blip a couple of years ago when taskin let the police kill 3,000 odd supposedly drug dealers, we shall settle on the figure of say for arguements sake 3,000 per year assasinations, ok it aint that high but lets play with some figures, so 3,000 killings, lets say they all only kill one person per year, so we have 3,000 assasins in Thailand, now Thailand has a population of around 60 million, so these 3,000 assasins are all in someway known by these 60 million odd people, either thru friends, relatives etc, hmmm, don't seem too likely to me, plus what about all the farangs that have access to guns here, how would that equate into it?

I've no idea, i was just quoting a post, i'm sure one of the esteemed Bangkok members of this forum must know some bar/club owners in Bangkok, so should be easy to find out if true or bollox that all bars have already received a letter.

It does seem strange to me though, as i was always under the impression bars never normaly got a letter to the day before, and no bars in Pattaya have yet received one. Although Dave from the Blues Factory was talking to his lawyer today and he thinks he may end up having to close for the above mentioned days but nothing in writing yet.

Because it is the last weekend of campaigning before the election, something to do with that anyway, can't remember the exact reason given though.

Fcuk knows mate, it might still all be bollox, like i said no bar owner in Pattaya has received a letter to close, it's just one guy on Thai360 claiming that all bars in Bangkok have received letters to close, and i know that's where stickman got his info from as i saw him reading the thread before his column came out but personaly not knowing any Bangkok bar owners i have no way of knowing if true or not.

Lets think about Thai law here, many years ago a few Thais sat round a table and drafted up a load of laws, laws and suitable punishments for the sale of beer and booze would have been one of them, now the only people that can sentence you to 6 months in jail are judges, for them to do that they need to have proof that you have broken the law, so those guys sitting round that table after discussing what punishments were suitable for the sale of booze when it aint supposed to be sold were all sitting there quite happily and in agreement, then suddenly one of them has an idea, "Hey guys, I got this great idea, why not lock up the customers aswell that were drinking, Hell, maybe lock them up for 6 months aswell".

I read the hysteria on Stickman also, but the local beer shop does not know about any of this. Maybe its an advertising ploy from Stickman.

Can't see why the "government" is making such a fuss about an election. If they don't like the result, they can simply squash it with a couple of tanks and keep having new elections until they get a result they do like. That's what democracy is all about, isn't it?

Not intending to start a fight, but ... I do remember an occasion around '95 or '96 when (at least) the bars in Soi Cowboy were closed for a two or three day weekend, the reason IIRC was that bars had to close from the time polls opened until results counted. Maybe "closed" wasnt the case; might have been liquor sales halted. [I didn't drink alcohol then, so didn't form a strong impression]

I don't remember the exact date/year, nor the exact reason, but do remember it happening, because I was warned about this a day or two earlier by a local friend, and was advised to secure a compatible companion for the duration (compatability being the key given the "lengthy" period).

I also remember visiting Cowboy during that period, and the bars were not serving. They were "open" in the sense that all the ladies who lived in the back/upstairs were hanging around, hard up for cash and looking for company.

Later that week, a waitress at a membership club I used to visit was peeved with me because I had apparently promised to spend that period with her, but hadn't done so, and she was miffed because she had no money.

FWIW, fragments from a fragile memory.

^^But this isn't about the polls, this is about the week before the polls and the bars being closed for 3 days.
