    Revealing photos

Recently, there has been a spat of some posters posting other members photos on TD.

    Arguments:

    1. The photos are on the net so who cares.
    2. It just ain't right without permission.

    Good or bad?

And no, I don't want no foking poll.
    Just some common sense discussion.

I don't think it's right, personally, but the internet can be a small world, at the end of the day.

without debating if it's right or wrong, what can one do about it anyway? sue? send a cease and desist pm ... and to whom? here in thailand? 555

I can see 'big shots', say the size of detox, crowned heads fire up their lawyers to come after the culprit but
I just can't see the rest of the little people on forums doing much about it

If the picture is on the net already with their permission, it's fair game to post a link.
Why would anybody post there pic on the net if they didn't want people to see it?

If I spend a lot of time gathering pictures for a decent thread, and posting them in the gallery, I would be more than a little peeved to have someone steal them before I managed to use them. After I had used them, I would be dissapointed if someone took them and used them out of context. If people asked permission, I would usually oblige. I think that we are guilty of thinking that our pictures are safe in the TD gallery, when they are, in fact, there for the whole world to see, if the world knew where to look.

I'm quite sure that if they wanted someone to see it on this forum that they'd post it on this forum.

Could be posted without the subject's knowledge or consent, but you're right once out there it belongs to the world.

In essence, I agree. If the photo was posted by that person, or with their permission (ie photos on someone's website or their blog or in a magazine - sorry, Ant) it's OK. If it's something that may not be down to them (ie on an unfaithful lovers site or similar) then it's not on to show a link.

do you really need telling why a picture posted on one of the other 100 milliion web sites in the world before you were even a member here isn't fair game?
especially when it is one member seeking out another member's photo for the purpose of nothing but shit stirring because he is aggrieved that he is being disagreed with and shit like that.

exactly, in the case of the twits that are attentions seeking hoes, often second thoughts emerge, but the cat is, too late, already out of the bag - the winging and recrimination, threats etc set in

and for the little people that got their pic taken and put on the Net without their consent, now what can they do? maybe the admin/mods can take it down but by then, especially for the more juicy pics, these have made it half around the world stored on a who knows how many servers

    That's a good point.

If they are posted, they are mainly only being used as part of an attack on another poster. If they are put up without permission, they should be taken down.

Motive has nothing to do with it. It's a black and white issue here.

Not really, I couldn't give a rat's arse if you, or, anyone else disapproved.
My position is that if someone has posted their picture on the net (clearly with their permission), then it belongs to the public domain. Period.

    Sir Burr.

we all have fukking posts deleted, all the time.

do you think the forum would be a better place for posters finding pictures of other posters and posting them for their own wrong sense of fun.

it has everything to do with the motive.

Where is the line? Posting a link is OK but a copy of the pic is not? As far as this board has gone there are pics from all over the net posted on it. So, any pic on the net is OK as long as we are sure it's not a fellow poster? Bullshit. Whether the person that takes he time to look up and post the pic has issues is a moot point. I think it's been discussed before that pics of posters without express permission is verbotten but a link to the site with a posters pic already on it and released to the World Wide Web? Posting a link to a site that may be of interest to others has always been an accepted manner to provide access to information and it should not be censored.

Yes I think many of us do need that explained. How in the fuck could anyone post their picture on the net with their own name and expect anonymity? A bit Pollyanna-ish ain't it?
Posting a link to a public web-site is perfectly acceptable. You want to remain anonymous, then remain so.

I'm not for or against this issue, but as SO says, the world is small now, and as Burr says, if it's on the net, then it's public and that is correct, whatever we like it or not. So it's up to the person who post the picture, his moral standards and what his point/plan is by doing so, if its to harm the person or is it in a supportive way, that is what the mods here have to work out, and that job sucks..
For myself, I know my picture is out there and I can to nothing about it, just accept it and move on.
