Do you miss the Christmas spirit?

It has been more than six years since I wrapped up warm and went out to the pub on a chilly British evening and drank with my friends as a fire crackled near a Christmas tree and people came in from the cold and hung up their hats and coats.

I have to admit I even miss walking through shopping malls and supermarkets in the UK around this time and watching all the shit on TV and hearing all those tedious songs by Slade and Shakin Stevens and that one I like called Stop The Cavalry by Jonah Lewie.

Thai's don't have a clue what Christmas is, but it makes money so they go for it instinctively - this is also the case in the west, I'm not having a pop at Thailand for it I'm just saying that sticking a Santa hat on the Heiniken promo girl at the Dubliner does not really constitute the spirit of christmas for me.

The spirit you referred to in your first paragraph is what I miss too.

I can certainly do without shopping for anything in the US between mid November and mid January. Absolute morons plying the aisles with piled-high shopping carts buying shit nobody needs or wants.

I'm flying back to England tonight, with the aim of partaking in that christmas spirit. I've never stayed in Thailand over this period of the year, for the precise reason that i can't imagine it's as good as being back home. The christmas/new year period is the best time of the year in England, beyond any shadow of a doubt.

I am in London now and the Xmas tension is building. The traffic seems worse, the shoppers more frantic, the weather gray and cold

I will be out of here in a couple of days and will not miss anything at all

I have not been in the U.S. for Xmas since 1999.

Since then, I've been living overseas.

I don't miss it at all. Getting together with family for good eating, drinking, and good times was fun. But that was back on the old home.

I don't celebrate it in Asia. Neither Thanksgiving nor Independence day.

It's just another day for me, here. And this is the way I choose it.

Last time I had X-Mas home was in 1990, I dont miss it, X-mas in our family was never that great or full of spirit..

Well sadly, I shall be 'enjoying' the Christmas spirit at the Bull's Head. Fuck knows how I used to scoff one of those big dinners down. I can't do it now, despite being a fatter b'stard than I used to be. Strange that.

No. As with so many things, Christmas has become a casualty of greed, overconsumption and unfettered commercialism. Even in Thailand a country with a 98% Buddhist population uses it to spur on retail sales.

I quite like not having to take any real notice of Christmas. A few presents for little boy & going out for Christmas lunch; that's all Christmas is for me here. No hassle.

But, I do miss the spirit a bit. And the cheesy music.

BTW, Scampy you're the only person I know who likes 'Can you stop the cavalry?', apart from me. It's one of my top Christmas songs, up there with the Pogues & Kirsty MacColl 'Fairytale of New York' and the Pretenders '2,000 miles'.

The bespectacled scottish poster boys song is not 2000 miles or 5000 miles, its 500 miles.

I like the pretenders 2000 miles as well.

The Pogues Fairytale of New York is my favourite christmas song though. What a shame it was kept off the christmas number one spot by by those hamster throttling pet shop boy wankers.

I do miss Christmas in the UK.

Will be going back for next Christmas without fail. Christmas in Singapore sucks. Preparing a slap up feast for the wife's family only to have them complaining that there are no noodles. I hope to be away working this Christmas if the family decide to invite themselves around again.

In the Philippines every house has a Christmas tree starting September. Yards, gardens, trees, verandas, fences, houses, parks, roads, and bldgs are all decorated with fancy Xmassy lights in different colours. Groups of people carrying torches sing Christmas carols in the neighborhood. Christmas carols are played all over the place (even in karaoke sessions). Department stores are all prettied up with Chrismas decors. Chunks of Cheese Balls, Ham, Pumpkin Pies, Yam, Turkey, Lechon, Pancit, and other delicacies are all over the place. Hmmmmmm

Kinda miss the parties and visiting friends and the parties, the dinners and the parties.
Did I mention the parties? Christmas Spirit was never about buying things or getting things.

folks would get together for few drinks, and other things, Sit/stand around having a good time, late nights, early mornings, cookies, pies, cakes, Wild Turkey, hot buttered rums Roast Ham, a quickie in the server room, Cold night motorcycle rides where the stroker would keep it's cool, Drunken/stoned rambling conversations with good, life-time friends Even the dysfunctional familial bullshit was entertaining during the season.

never did any christmas shopping until Christmas Eve. Go shopping for myself. Bought shit I liked then gave it away to people I liked.

Yeah, I miss it.
