Moved to Isaan - some strange foreigners in town.

I completed my move last week to live (hopefully long-term) in a small town on the banks of the Mekong river.

I've spent the last few days finding my bearings and checking out the local supermarket/shopping centre.

It's about 12 years since I last visited this town. On that occasion, I saw no 'farangs'. This time I've spotted quite a few foreigners.

But at first sight they all (all of them!) look... well ... not quite in tip-top shape.

    - I saw 2 morbidly obese guys struggling to walk in the supermarket with their Isaan wives in tow
    - I saw another obese guy who was dribbling and appeared to be mentally sub-normal
    - Yet another guy who hadn't shaved nor cut his hair in years, looking like he had just come out of a jungle
    - Several elderly 'gentlemen' wearing shorts and sandals with socks, with not the slightest smile or look of contentment on their faces.

Basically, every foreigner that I spotted looked overweight, unfit, mad or miserable.

I'll spare naming the town in case any of those sad twats are TD members......

Christ Simon, what on earth are you thinking sharing that. That there is your sideline business opportunity. Trim and Stiff; shed the pounds and get the boner back...

Basically, every foreigner that I spotted looked overweight, unfit, mad or miserable.
I would think that most foreigners would turn into bloated depressed drooling psychopaths after a few years of living in the broiling parched wastes of isaan and having to put up with their squawking tattooed wives with their incessant financial demands, their cackling gimlet eyed mothers in law, their grasping bugmunching brothers in law and the myriad grimy hunchbacked crones that seem to permanently shuffle around the villages like zombies, all the while existing in the fetid shacks that pass for homes.

I can't help dribbling and there aren't any shops here that sell my size.
OK I'm a bit over weight but that will fall off in the in the colder seasons.
    The Barber bloke left.
You just can't get well fitting sandals here. The only solution is to pad them out a bit.
I used Modem pads for a while but she objected.
It was a fair comment as she tended to dribble a bit.
Hopefully this will be resolved when she hits her teens.

Anyway, welcome to our town. I'm sure you'll fit in.
How many children do you have.

I visited there and thought it was pretty freaking cool. It's honestly one of the few places where it is actually dirt cheap to live I've found in Thailand.

Nigel, Simon explained it in one of his previous posts, if you search there's not many so should be easy to find- i think in summary it's because its near the border, he works online so it could be anywhere and Thailand is a base from which to travel. Oh and he likes splay footed temptresses.

yup, cheap eats, naught but a trend...

    https://www.cnn.com/2017/06/12/healt...udy/index.html

(CNN)More than 2 billion adults and children globally are overweight or obese and suffer health problems because of their weight, a new study reports.

This equates to one-third of the world's population carrying excess weight, fueled by urbanization, poor diets and reduced physical activity.

The United States has the greatest percentage of obese children and young adults, at 13%, while Egypt led in terms of adult obesity, with almost 35%, among the 195 countries and territories included in the study.

I guess I'd have to ask Simon, what would you expect to see out there? I would venture to say that the majority of the foreigners that move there had to primarily because they are old, out of shape, sickly and live on a thin budget. That's the only place that would support them and they can find a woman. If you would have posted that you saw a bunch of foreigners that had it going on I'd probably call BS....

Don't have any razor blades, need a shave, when if we go to the city, Ubon, barber, 60 Baht.
Otherwise small electric hair clippers, head and face once a week or so, no one to impress.

Socks, never wear them, except when wear hiking boots, but anyone living in the back blocks of Issan, will go troppo as we say in Australia.
Heat, bugs and booze will send you over the line, but it's better for some than a lonely life in a cold miserable country.

As I've said before, I'd be on the first plane out, if someone stuck a million dollars in my bank account.

    No thanks.

I see loads of Foreigners with bad hair dye jobs, fresh tats and poor dress attire grasping at their last straw of pretending to be young in hopes a young gal will jump on them. It's really weird. FCS....just be yourself. It looks pathetically sad.

In order to reignite growth in Thailand's tourist industry, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has embarked on a new campaign for 2015 entitled "2015: Discover Thainess". TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said the campaign will incorporate the "twelve values" that Thai junta leader and Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha wants all Thais to practice. TAT officials foresee a large increase in tourist numbers due to the "Discover Thainess" campaign. Ms Somrudi Chanchai, Director of the TAT Northeastern Office, has forecasted that tourists to her Isaan region will increase by 27.9 million visitors, generating 65 billion baht in revenue.
