India's first high speed train breaks down on inaugural trip

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the train's inauguration.

India's first locally built high speed train has broken down on its first trip (sorry) , a day after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    Key points:

    • The Vande Bharat Express is India's first locally built high speed train
    • The train can travel at a maximum speed of 180 kilometres per hour
    • India's Railway Minister has ordered 100 more units

The Vande Bharat Express was travelling back from Varanasi in northern Uttar Pradesh when it broke down about 200 kilometres from New Delhi. It resumed its journey after two hours before coming to a halt again.

The train had to be brought to Delhi to fix the fault.

Indian media quoted a railways spokesperson as saying the train may have struck cattle on the line, but there were no signs of damage on the front of the train.
Staff on board the train said there were thumping noises when the train's speed was increased and that the fault had led to the control failures of the air-conditioners.

    A harmless teething problem.

Nothing to worry about, no lives lost.

I'm just looking forward to seeing all the wobblies trying to hang off that baby.

much the same as thailand, as far as changing ways. the proposed h/s/t to link the airports, open 2023, elevated or not.
i use two crossings in patts every day, two or more times. a couple of weeks ago the alarm goes of, train comeing, somchia is determined to be first off when the barier rises. somchai gets up in front closer than everyone else , one of those brain dead types on a moto/side car, trader types, so he sits there with a very pleased look on his face, untill the barrier came down on his plastic roof.... darwin please take over.

Nothing wrong with the railway system in India as long as they don't try to modernise it. Runs on time, nobody knows how, and when BR sent their experts over a couple decades ago to help improve the service they returned saying leave it as is and BR could learn from it.

One porter rushed over apoplectic as I was being helped onto the upper deck, explaining apologetically that when someone falls off it's bye bye and the train rolls on, but if a foreigner falls off they must stop and it delays everyone. India's the place, in a time warp where everything works just fine, hands off!

Everyone has an Indian Railways story; Even if they haven't travelled on it.

Cultural question: How do you modernise a country thats happy as it is.
