Thread: Anyone taken the Trans-Siberian?

Always wanted to take this trip, and now that I am in Mongolia I have the perfect chance for the long summer break. Getting the visa for Russia seems easy enough here as I have a resident card.

Looking at stops I want to make\

Ulan Ude- supposed to be quite unique culturally due to it proximity to the Mongolian border.
Irkutsk- for the lake
Omsk- have a friend there and it will break the journey up
Yekaterinburg- for historical stuff
Moscow

Then after Moscow for a few days my plan is St Petersburg before crossing the border into Europe.

What class to travel seems to be a subject of much contention for travelers- not sure if 1st class is worth it- second class seems fine, as does 3rd class- luxury compared to Myanmar!

I'd like to do something similar also.

I did look into the Orient Express a while back, very pricey though.

My wife has been nagging me about this since we met.

Looks like we have a TD train trip in the runnings! Me,Ant, YD....who else?

Moscow, S.P., not in Europe?

Mandy, a few years out of date but the BC did a documentary, me i did it in good ole 98 so not relevant not i should imagine - then you had to take supplies and the atmosphere was one of run down camaraderie, swapping snacks with locals and trying not to get too drunk with them on voddie.

An infrequent poster on here Jimmy McNulty did it a few years ago, did a good blog on it, i'll see if I can find it

Always wanted to do this. Starting in the south of Vietnam, up to Beijing and across. Would definitely look into doing it if in your position.
