    India

For quite a while now I've been interested in the hypocrisy of the state known as India.
The disparity twixt wealth and poverty, the obscene wealth of the few and the abject poverty of the many.
The fact that the concept of the "unclean" still persists whilst multi billionaires build huge multi story homes in the midst of poverty and homelessness.
    Now we appear to have further evidence of the insanity and stupidity of Indian "HiSos" with this little missive;

    www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-46778879

Often touted as an emerging economic power the UK Government still gives aid, as do many other other countries.
It's an absurd situation whereby the rich get richer and the poor just rot.

How can any country offer support to a system that still supports the concept of the Dalit, "unclean" caste and the horrendous abuse they are subjected to?

I've worked with NGO's in the 3rd. world and I felt good about helping, but the obscenity that is modern day India is unconscionable.

End of rant for the time being.

    Because officially they don't.

It's not much different to Thailand's status system. A dark skinned Southerner would never be accepted to a BKK government position, and BKK does not allocate funds to the South to elevate these peasants.
    Ban nok people are despised.

Here's a good one about the corruptness of the UK. "Royal mail" class china as developing nation and therefore allow chinese business to split kilos of postage up into small parcels at very cheap rates. therefore the average price for a small package from China to the UK is 0.5p. That's right - half a pence to send something from china to the UK. Now the reason for this was lobbying from businesses and notably amazon and ebay who take in fees the money that should be used for postage. This is one of the reasons UK postage rates are through the fucking roof as we are paying for chinese firms to take business away from UK businesses. Corrupt to the core.

That's veered away from your standard level of just about making a semblance of sense, and into complete gibberish.

It’s interesting that the British empire created the biggest employer anywhere in the world, (not counting the PLA). The Indian railway system, still mostly run on paper, covers the nation with employment opportunities, although nepotism plays a large part in selection for those wanting to get on the first rung of that ladder.
The UK has a fair number of generational immigrant families from the 1950s onwards, including those repatriated during Amin’s time as leader of Uganda. The NHS would be just as lost without them, as they would be without flipper nurses.

I knew an Indian engineer, qualified and experienced, who ended up being castigated as a “Paki” because he ran a corner shop. Two delightful daughters, both with business degrees.

The British never overturned the caste system before granting independence. Like most parts of the empire, many things were left undone in the rush to unburden the UK of responsibility for the former colonies.
Interesting to compare the French attitude, who hung around longer, but don’t seem to have achieved much by doing so.

In exchange for steam trains and cricket, they gave us some of their work ethic and business acumen. Has business outsourcing stemmed the tide of immigration. Perhaps, but it’s still not the panacea of cheap labour that businesses hoped it might be.

Plenty of outcasts living ignored on the streets of UK these days.

Would be amusing if it turns out the UK borrows money from China and then returns it as aid while paying interest on it. Could never be, eh?

They would never do that. The British empire thrived on divide and conquer, and the caste system was key to their success in India

After WWII, the empire cost far too much to maintain. It had to go. Hence the rush to grant independence, with little thought for the consequences.
Falklands in the next decade. Rapidly becoming a financial drain and offers the same training opportunities MoD already has in Wales.

Falklands is a small group of insignificant, remote islands with little or no economic or political value. Like Hawaii :-)

I have a billion barrels of oil that says you are wrong. don't make the mistake of thinking The State gives a fuck about losses, losing public money etc. no such thing as it is not their money. Falklands will NEVER be given away, not least because at 250 miles away from Argentina, their claim is dubious as well.

Just following government logic Sid. Remember the Brit Military presence in Singapore was closed in the mid 70s, just before St Margaret came to power. (We retain refueling facilities for RN to this day).
Those FI fishing licenses bring in a few quid too.

Im assuming this is behind Gavin Williamson’s idea to base troops in areas where we have previous experience of military logistics. The shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea could be greater assets than FI if something has to give.

The Falklands inc South Georgia offers the UK its access and claim on its chunk of the Antarctic, together with any possible associated mineral extraction and of course the strategic position. The UK lacks such a foothold in the Arctic which is a huge territorial miss.

The territories were already divided across the empire through local fiefdoms, and yes this was used to the British advantage.
