    Isaan songs

They all sound the same to me when I've seen the Mor Lam at festivals in Thailand and in the UK. Slow one. Fast one with lots of "hep hep hep" shouts.

But if you were thinking of becoming a Mor Lam super star. So what cover would you do?

I seem to remember there is one about a drunk bloke that is amusing.

This fucker - accent shit and can't dance for toffee. Bet one of us could do better.

Maybe 'cos he is meant to be singing in Lao language, not Issan, and although very similar, they are not the same

This guy taught me to play the khaen...

Agree that his dancing is crap

Ahh that will be it then.

Now - It's funny you should mention that because I stumbled upon that geezer and then thought that I could be in the hit parade if I sand a few isaaaaaarn laos lao songs as well, having seen locally a collection of Thai and Laos instruments for sale, one of which is a khean.

(for those who do not know)

They also include some angklung as well.

Get your freak on to that.

2 of my ex-wives are from Issan, Sakhon Nakon and Sisaket. Their Issan accents are totally different.

I understand Issan reasonably well after shacking up with them for years. But Issan is just a spoken language, whereas Lao is also written. I migrated from Issan to Lao after doing an MA in Thai Culture (boasting!) and learning to read/write Thai reasonably well.

I once landed the job as boss of the new international school in Luang Prabang (Laos) because I could speak reasonable Lao and had hands-on building experience (from my hotels in Phuket). (My headmastership skills were minimal).

The idea was that I would manage the build of the new multi-million $ school campus buildings and oversee the labourers.

Unfortunately, it turned out that the school owner had imported dozens of labourers from her native Vietnam, who not only understood zero Lao and English, but also hadn't been informed of my role, and steadfastly refused to listen to my concerns about constructing classrooms with no network (no wifi then) internet cables and toilets for the youngest kids placed about 300 metres away from the classrooms.....

It was never going to end well

    Hell yeah.
When I first visited my wife she took me to a Morlam show in a temporary enclosure in a field.
It was walled by 4m sheets of roofing iron and they were visibly moving from the (loud) sound pressure.
Being a bit autistic and generally not into deafening music I wondered if Id survive but once through the looking glass I was entranced.
The muppet bands in the wings going hard, lightshow on acid, costumes that make Liberace look dowdy, dozens of performers etc etc.
Music as above - alternately rocking out and syrupy ballads (love rock but loathe syrup).
    Top show.

    edit - fucking spellcheck

^ I don't like it either. And as someone posted earlier in the thread, it's not Isaan, it's from Laos. The script gives it away and even the Youtube write-up says it's "the native melody and dance of Salavan province in Laos".

Lao is spoken where I live in Buriram Province with a little Cambodian as well. Thai is only used/taught at school.

Same here. Roiet was once part of the Lao kingdom. Isaan is a mish mash of several languages.
