Don't lose hope. My son was addicted, but I constantly forced him to come with me on expeditions, even if it was only out to the garden to see a chrysalis or to visit the local mosque (shortly after 9/11). He's now doing his PhD in marine biology at age 25, currently part of the crew sailing a dual hull Polynesian canoe from NZ to the Cook Islands.

You won't have twisted that account to suit your voracious vanity at all, I'm sure.

Well done to your son for surviving it.

Boeing 747 parked up on the outskirts of Korat.

This airplane, in Orient Thai livery, was stored at Korat airport for a long time before being scrapped and turned into a kind of amusement park. You can now have a very expensive coffee and piece of cake while looking at the plane.

In all honesty the reality isn't nearly as exciting as I've made it sound.

The only thing of note from this visit was my sat nav sending me up a long dead end in the middle of a huge taro farming area, much to the amusement of my young daughter. Amazing really, she can no longer remember visiting the plane but she can certainly remember the time papa got lost and started using bad words.

Note the lifeguard lower right. Doubt he can swim, but may be capable of throwing the lifesaver accurately

Your life must be truly pathetic and sad if you doubt a dad would take his kid places.
^ And indeed, mounting an "expedition" out into the garden with a young boy, binoculars slung around his neck, toy gun etc is pretty normal parenting I think. Cyrille resents it because his life has been and still is so terribly miserable.
Perhaps NZ gardens are a bit bigger than the balconies of the terraces or one's plot in the allotment in Britain?

Have fond memories of the Dordogne in the 70s. Use to go camping near a place called Argentat, 3 good sized lakes and we used to drive down and take a sailing dinghy. Queue for bread in the morning and be fascinated and disgusted at watching the French ladies with armpit hair tuck their french stick under their pits and march off back to make brekkie.

In the evenings do the people in the campgrounds there gather around campfires with strangers drinking and socializing...or does everyone stick to themselves and watch SAT TV?

    Are you a germaphobe?

You really do post some squeamish nonsense about what you perceive as 'non-UK' eating habits.

Yeah, it's foreign muck, innit. But to be fair to Nummy, a loaf of bread tucked into a hairy armpit is a bit off-putting.

It was an observation back in the early 70s in a foreign country, remember you thought Manchester was exotic back then. You been switching your sundowners for sunrisers.

People keep themselves to themselves. Even on the more outdoorsy sites people seem less social than years ago.

Sarlat in the Dordogne was like Venice, a hollowed out tourist town, more like a Disney set with shops selling crazy overpriced cheese and foie gras

Used to go to the local cafe cum bar in Argentat lunchtime and to stock up on groceries and a 1/2 a french stick with a centimeter thick slab of cheese or pate along its length was 15 centimes
