The top end of the "riser' presumably can connect into the underside of the FPSO, to a floating buoy, or other thing?

Like the multiple yellow pipes to the large semi submersible in the centre?

Or the small yellow and white tanker connection/storage buoy, with one yellow riser, on the right of the semi submersible and off loading tanker? :

There's many different designs. In your picture the yellow risers are connected to the semi-sub which will store the oil (in the legs I think) until offloaded by tanker. The risers are flexible and the buoyancy modules you can see give the risers that lazy S catenary which is important to absorb any movement from the floating semi-sub. All the other lines connected to the semi-sub are for anchorage. The flexible risers are connected to rigid oil pipelines via a short static riser section at the bottom right of your picture. The oil pipelines connect to the many satellite wells. At the right of your picture is a single point mooring system that a tanker will offload from also.

In my photo the FPSO takes the place of the semi-sub in your picture. The FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading) is a large vessel converted to a processing platform. The risers connect to the FPSO where some degree of processing will take place before the oil is stored and then periodically offloaded to tanker.

In this field (Åsgard) the oil is transported via tanker in this manner and gas is pumped south via a 700km, 42" subsea pipeline.

Mendip, what type of 'gas' is produced?

I guess you'd just call it natural gas, same as you cook with, produce electricity, use in industry etc, but now I'm getting out of my comfort zone. The Norwegians send it via pipeline all across the North Sea - UK, Germany, Belgium, France...

A hydrocarbon trap will generally contain gas on oil in varying degrees, depending on how cooked it is by temperature/pressure. The aim is to recover as much of both as possible.

Off topic but what the heck. Just back from the USA to see a graduation. The little twins all grown up and with good jobs now... UC Berkeley. Vanessa picked up her diploma May 20th. Her sister who picked up her diploma last year is wearing the lighter blue sash from UC Santa Barbara.

Excellent news and as Looper says, you've produced some good kids. What careers have they chosen to follow?

Swimming lessons for a new arrival.

The swimming comes naturally of course. We don't encourage dogs in the pool for hygiene, but they have to be taught to swim to the steps in case they ever fall in. A few swims and job done.

When I say 'we', my wife is much stricter than I...

In all fairness though, in hot weather the dogs spend a lot of time in the fish pond and are usually coated in mud. They also love to roll in all manner of foul smelling stuff they come across.

Is there any water left in the pool after she jumps in?

Max having a quiet moment with the newly planted coriander seeds.

... blissfully unaware that he's about 3 minutes away from getting yelled at by the wife and then chased around the garden with a stick.

    It's better than telly.

It would be stored in the pontoon tanks, base of the legs.

Natural gas, Methane gas same thing, the gas you don't want is H2S, Saudi has a lot, present in other areas also, makes steel brittle and kills you!
In the early days of North sea oil, the government orders were to get as much oil out as quickly as possible, the infrastructure wasn't there to deal with the gas so billions of cu.ft of gas were flared off, the reason they wanted the oil so desperately was to prepare for the upcoming miners strike which Thatcher was determined to win - at any cost!

in thailand on holiday - I like night markets
Post any pic anytime as many as u like-img_20190607_220440-jpg

I went down south (while the missus attended to other bidness). I worked here as an ajarn well over a decade ago - it has changed a bit but not a great deal - I've hired a honda wave (or whatever the 2019 version is) and re-living the putt-putting thru the countryside - in the evening just before sunset - magic (except for the bugs in the face)...it makes me think about returning...

    Yes.

    1. Mendip has uploaded his photos to his gallery and posted the image url into his posts, so the photos are not attached to the post and so do not show up as attached images to the post. Mendip has technically hotlinked his photos from his gallery to his post.
