its prosperity that counts not money and is the main reason originally that most people IMO were/are so attracted to Thailand.

Money, gold, coloured beads, flint spear heads is all that's ever really counted. Religion was just a distraction to steal it off you.

Luckily my Mrs is a tight bitch, monetarily.
Most Thais, however poor have some land though. The family structure accounts for a lot here.

Money is the artificial yardstick we use for comparative purposes. Otherwise, back to the barter system... how many shoes must the cobbler provide the roofer to patch the leak
It's the love of money that's said to be the root of all evil. Nothing intrinsically wrong with money/wealth even though in our strange world it's often attacked by those who made lots of it telling the impoverished it's evil.

all those surveys only look at average, which is a misleading metric since the world wealth distribution is complete skewed by a factor of 1,000

looking at the medians would be a good start,

what are the medians like in that study ?

Agree that the stats are pretty crazy, guess I am pretty fortunate. Although when I look at percentiles for the UK it seems I am not even in the top 50%

There is no objective measure by which any people anywhere can be said not to be better off on average than they were 100 years ago in terms of any quantifiable measure of human flourishing.

This is true for every demographic you could choose whether that be social stratification, race, gender, sexual orientation, geographical location.

This is also true of any measure of human flourishing whether that be longevity, wealth, education, healthcare, IQ, nutrition, egalitarianism, equal opportunity, technological advance, philosophical wisdom, total objective knowledge of the universe.

Our little planet is getting better by the decade in terms of human well-being whether we like it or not.

Money is relative. I know people that have a lot and they are miserable MF's. I know some living on the edge and they are happy and just make it work. Money only makes things easier if you learn to live within your means. Most fail miserably at that. They start to make more and then spend more and usually only go deeper in debt. Then when the bottom falls out, they have to liquidate all the shit they amassed to get through it or worse yet start taking from the IRA or 401K to make ends meet. Its a slippery slope.

IMO, money is the root of all evil and corruption. It has been, and always will be. I say find your spot in life and live it. I plan on running out of money by 75 or so. After that IDGAF as I will become just another coffin dodger waiting to bite the bullet.

I am also uncertain education, diet, equal opportunity or philosophical wisdom have advanced much if at all in my lifetime, though I may be wrong or hoodwinked.Medicine , dentistry and childbirth have of course improved .

While I agree and enjoy most of your posts may I add one thing about the much discredited IQ.

At any point in time or any group a majority will be at or below average.

Let us assume there are 101 members on a web forum Mr or Mrs or Ms Average has IQ 100, 50 will be below and 50 will be above.QED 51 will be at or below average, equally 51 are at or above average, see the rabbit hole opening....

Looking more positively at a stute like you obviously in any group you will be at or above the average.

The Stanford Binet tests have long been viewed as skewed yet are still quoted.

As others note median and mode may reveal more insightful and useful data.

LSE teacher Ribbens had us young shavers read the still amusing Huff's

HOW TO LIE WITH STATISTICS, an ideal stocking filler

    http://faculty.neu.edu.cn/cc/zhangyf...Statistics.pdf

Well worth re reading it's amusing to see how skewed samples are used by snake oil sales people politicians and sloppy social scientists.
It is available as a pdf on line.I'll attempt to attach here or see the linky. The 146 pages won't upload (may be too big)

^^ Statistics - an adept and/or practiced debater/manipulator can take just about any set of statistics and present them in a manner to advocate pretty much any desired point-of-view and/or position

It is all in the presentation
