I have just been involved in a similar debate about Cambridge Union students banning Remembrance Sunday as it ‘celebrates’ and glorifies war.
It matters not that they are wrong about the reasons for remembrance. They are young and as the demographic on here suggests, their only experience of war, will be the rather pointless and destructive issues in the ME and Afghanistan.
They didn’t grow up playing in WWII bomb shelters, regaled by the experiences of their parents and grandparents, during the last century.

All they know is the political disasters in Lybia, Syria and Iraq, Afghanistan. There’s a lot to be said for experiential learning.
Dont be blaming kids because they don’t have your experiences of the pointless stupidity of political wars.

If you are going to have a debate, it's important to have knowledge of the subject at hand.

It was not about "banning Remembrance Sunday".

It was a motion to promote Remembrance Sunday and the selling of poppies.

Many felt that Cambridge should be remembering all victims of all wars, and separate itself from links with Arms companies, presumably some of which donate to the university.

In the end neither the original nor and alternative motion were presented.

Remembrance Day carries on, and poppies will be sold.

It's up to the individual to participate, as it should be, not be told what to do by a load of entitled Tory Toffs doing what mater and pater tell them.

For me, and some of the original put-downers, it had nothing to do with the sense of her speech and everything to do with her being an extremely irritating speaker. A manic uneloquent speaker.

I think, as does the speaker, that feminism has gone off the rails and she does make some valid points.

Pagilia is a brave intellectual who takes on any and all intellectuals she disagrees with. she has said it's better to name the person you disagree with and say the reason why rather than robe yourself in intellectual b.s. that swims around the point trying to be made (or something to that effect).

i'm looking forward to reading her book that just came out: Provocations: Collected Essays.

Thanks for that, hick. It was helpful. After reading it, I watched the video all the way through (the first 2 minutes were the worst).

Everything she said in the video sounded plausible, and I'd never heard of second wave feminism so I'll take it at face value.

If I was to criticise anything, apart from her presentation style, it would be that she says she now self-censors when she's teaching because she feels her students can't take harsh reality/are easily upset/are snowflakes. That seems to go against her professed attitude earlier in her life ("give us the freedom to risk rape"). Apart from that, OK. Some is quite interesting. Hard to be too critical. For me anyway.
