    French Foreign Legion

Looks pretty brutal, but can see the appeal of it if you are in dire circumstances and need a change of life. Very interesting documentary. I'd never do it personally, but respect those that see it out and change their life around.

A new recruit to the Legion was stationed in outer Algeria. On his first night in the barracks, he was woken by the sound of a trumpet and all the men raced out of the barracks, naked.
Totally bemused, he caught up with the crowd who were jostling to climb a ladder to get into the camel corral.
"What's happening?" he asked the guy at the back of the queue.
"Oh, it's camel-humping Thursday. Every Thursday night we're allowed to fvck the camels. It's very very lonely out here in the desert and some guys have not seen a women for years".
"Ok...but why the rush?...I mean, they're only camels and there's enough to go around!"
"You don't want to get an ugly one, do you?"

Interesting, they are quite a sizable force c9000, you get french citizenship after three years service or immediately if you are injured in service.

Hmm, well due to Brexit I will be joining and "accidentally" shooting myself in the foot. It's almost poetic.

They operate more in the old central african french territories, less so now in north africa. I wonder how many in French Guinea chose this route of joining up to get into Europe vs the boats from Libya

They have to actually get into France first to join up so the answer is (probably) none.

Yes. A few Kiwis have done it and gone on to be NZSAS.
With equal equipment, I'd put the SAS odds on over the SEALs.
    Don't mention the Thai SEALs

Not so far from the truth, most militaries are investing significantly in Cyber. Showing my age, but reminds me of the original Star Trek episode where they land on a planet to find two factions at war in a game environment except that simulated attacks resulted in actual people having to go off voluntarily and get vapourised.

I was in the 'British Legion'. They used to do a Sunday Dinner and a pint for £6.50 every week-end.

The Legion used to have a recruiting poster at Carrefour where you went on booze trips.
Have a row with the missus/mother/significant other ? Phone up and they will collect you leaving her to get back to blighty drunk and incapable.
Then you go for basic training in Corsica then shipped out to somewhere disgusting where you abuse the natives and shag their women.

Does getting syphilis count as a wound in action ?

French Foreign Legion Tattoo and Tattoo Policy
Banned or inappropriate tattoos for enlistment in the Foreign Legion:

the Nazi and racist tattoo (Nazi-swastika, A.Hitler, Ku-Klux-Klan for example)
a stupid tattoo on your face/arms, even if it seems to be small
(if you have a little drop near your eye, you can try to join; if you have a vagina tattoo between your eyes or a penis tatoo on your arm, stay at home)
a larger tattoo across your face (a genuine tribal tattoo is allowed in some cases)

only 10-15% are selected and you get your personality tested, so that's put a lid on anyone off here being taken on

^ Met a few when I was diverted to Nimes many years ago. Not sure about that personality test being a requirement...a couple of Danes we met were definitely ones to be very weary of. Great drinking partners, so many from TD would get along nicely.
