Wreck of greatest ship in the history of world found!!

    Great news...!

The wreck of HM Bark Endeavour may have been found at Newport Rhode Island.

The ship that brought civilisation to Australia was used to recapture Newport during the American revolution and was then scuttled to prevent the horrible stinking onion breathed frenchies getting access to the port in a final act of noble sacrifice in the service of the greatest empire in the history of the world.

But some folk think they have found her...

Greatest ship to ever put out of Portsmouth, perhaps. She did have a venerable history, starting out as a collier and then eventually sailing completely around the world (around Cape Horn, no less!) to discover Australia, then on to do navy work in the US.
I will put aside the myth that Cook was the first European to plant foot on Tera Australis. Dirk Hartog, a Dutchman, beat him to it by a couple of hundred years, and of course Zeng He probably mapped Ozzy before that.

A few years ago, I was horrified to learn that one of my ancestors was in the second fleet....and a woman, too ! I had not previously known there were any convicts in my family. I think that at that level of ancestry I had 128 ancestors.
There was another also....at the level of 64 ancestors....a man.

Probably explains my kleptomanic tendency for stealing pens

I believe Australia was discovered by many including St Ant of Wakwaka, Irish Monk St Bunnyface etc but they had the common decency to keep quiet about it.

I don't know. Probably debatable. What constitutes "great"?
To me, a flatish bottomed collier traversing the world and then some, is pretty remarkable for the 1700's.

Imagine rounding Cape Horn on a flat-bottomed, heavy sailing ship, then crossing the Pacific. Epic.

None of them leaky tubs had a space shuttle named after them.

I will see your Bismarck and raise you a Scharnhorst (and her sister ship the Gneisenau).

The Scharnhorst sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious off the coast of Norway in June 1940 with one of the longest range naval ballistic shell strikes in history.

The Glorious was struck at a distance of 24 kilometres, while moving at full speed, by the Scharnhorsts 11 inch main guns at maximum elevation.

Of course if you're really going ballistic ,pre rocketry and B52 the Big Berthas shelled Paris fromm130km. Interestingly the gunners were arguably more accurate than today's Arsenal F.C. ?

The Paris Gun, which was used in combat in 1918, only had a range of 130 km, but even then it couldn't hit a target smaller than a city, and
. . . the gunners actually needed to calculate the earth’s rotation when aiming the weapon. Simply put, by the time one of the gun’s shells returned to earth from its then unprecedented 130,000 foot high flight path, the city had moved slightly with the planet’s own rotation.

In terms of seamanship those long Ocean transits of the Maoris and other Pacific people's set a pretty high bar, no SATNAV , safety assessments or insurance, just astrology, guts and determination or Tom Crean's escape from Elephant Island

I can give you that Top Trumps card on Range David.

Although it should be noted that Paris is somewhat larger than HMS Illustrious and was not moving at 30 knots!

And naval shells have to contend with a moving launch platform.

Here is the Scharnhosrt herself actually firing those salvoes on that day.

And an interesting shot of USS Iowa firing broadside. You can see the wake from the gun barrels after firing.

Great images and we all know a moving target is harder to hit, and firing from a moving target with modern guided telemetry it was in indeed amazing.Star wars and the Rod of God may of course surpass this and the first to actuate will gain hegemony.X rocket is likely doing the measureents and is TESLA's real milk cow

US claims to have downed 1 ICBM of course like the Iron Dome , hitting one is great but you need to be confident of stopping ALL incoming nukes not to retaliate in teh old cold war MAS scenario, nearly launched but for the sense of the Russian who saved the planet

I like the old 120-gun broadside, must've been a thrill.

That article is obviously a troll as it conveniently avoids any mention of the greatest invention in Australian history.
