^Nope. Would have thought you would have been over this like a rash.

On reflection, the second one would be more elegant as:

    Pickled African-American gangster (9)

    New one for you:

Whom the drifty do favour? (5, 5-4)

^ not quite getting it there David.

OK. The thing about a good cryptic crossword clue is that it gives you the answer twice. Pretty much anything is acceptable (anagrams, word run-ons, substitutions, allusions etc). A good cryptic clue should make you wince, smile or say "f*ck" when it finally dawns on you. Now, my humble efforts are not in that league - but lets see where I was going:

    1. Whom the drifty do favour? (5, 5-4). The first half of the clue tells us we are after a name - the second half "drifty do favour" is an anagram of "David Forty-four". (5, 5-4).

(not really satisfying, as the first half is a bit weak to me).

    2. Pickled African-American gangster (9)

Pickle = Dill, African = inger (anagram of "Niger" the country!!) together Dillinger - second half of the clue - "American gangster" : Dillinger.
(This one is a bit better as it does give you the answer twice, but lucky there are not two "G"s in Dillinger!).

    3. Lulus favourite person from New York? Them? They! (5,3,5)

Lulus favourite (person) = ??, Person = (MAN), from New York (NY), Them? they! (THE METHY (anagram)) = MANNY THE METHY or Lulus favourite person!

    (Quite like that one!).

I used to meet a couple of ex service pals for breakfast every day. One of them owned a restaurant, but we enjoyed the daily crossword in the post. Used to get harder every day until Saturday, when sometimes we needed lunch as well as breakfast. Happy days.
