    Kim Jong-un ... on a wing and a prayer

Kim Jong-un's Ilyushin jet takes off from China.

Kim Jong-un's Soviet-era Ilyushin-62M plane set to fly him from North Korea to Singapore

Kim Jong-un's trip to Singapore marks a rare occasion the North Korean leader is heading overseas.

Following a family tradition, Mr Kim is known to use a special armoured train for travel.

But of course that's not an option for getting to the island-state of Singapore.
So just how will Mr Kim make the big trip? A plane of course!

Kim Jong-un arrives in Dalian, China last month

Mr Kim made his first international trip by air since becoming leader in 2011 when he visited China last month for a meeting with Xi Jinping.
He flew on his personal Ilyushin-62M jet, named Chammae-1 after the country's national bird, the Goshawk.

An Ilyushin cargo plane was also part of trip.

It seems this will also be his transport of choice to get to Singapore.

    What is an Ilyushin-62M?

The cockpit of an Ilyushin Il-62 plane.

It's a Soviet-era airliner first conceived in Russia in the 1960s, with the last ones produced in the mid-1990s.
It was said to be the world's biggest jet airliner when it was first flown in 1963.

It's just over 50 metres long and as a passenger plane could carry nearly 200 passengers.
But there are now very few left in service around the world.

Can such an old plane make it to Singapore?

There is speculation Singapore was more favoured for the summit over, say, Geneva because of fears the North Korean
delegation would have trouble getting themselves that far.

The Ilyushin-62M has a range of about 10,000 kilometres, which puts Singapore safely within non-stop flying distance.

But there have been questions about the mechanical reliability and absence of advanced communications systems
    typical of modern planes.

And Mr Kim's cargo plane, carrying things like his limousine, can't fly as far with a full load and might need to stop for
    refuelling along the way
    .

It occurred to me that his plane might mysteriously vanish somewhere over the South China Sea. I wouldn't put it past Trump or the Pentagon.
    Then I read...

... and the speculation gets a bit stronger.

NorK will of course have speculated this too.
My pick is the summit will occur in the DMZ, Korea.

The US goes goes one better as they have "2" 747 200B's

    https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/a-t...r-force-one/4/

And he will be taking his own armored 'motorcade'

Trump’s convoy would likely consist of up to 50 vehicles – judging by the size of typical US presidential motorcades – and will mostly be managed by US Secret Service agents.

Leading the pack would be the route car and pilot car which provide intelligence to the rest of the motorcade. Sweepers which include police motorcycles and patrol cars follow behind to clear a path for the President’s state car.

Trailing Trump’s limousine closely is a massive fleet of vehicles comprising several black SUVs carrying officials, intelligence personnel, counter assault teams as well as communications and security experts.

Behind the SUVs is a truck transporting the Hazard Materials Mitigation Unit, followed by press vehicles, The White House Communications Agency vehicle and ambulance.

    The Beast

As grand as the motorcade may turn out to be, the presidential state car will undoubtedly be the star of the show.

Trump’s ride is a custom black limousine made by General Motors and first launched in 2009 for former President Barack Obama’s inauguration. It is colloquially referred to as “Cadillac One” or “The Beast” – and for very good reason.

Like a fortress on wheels, the monstrous nine-tonne Beast has both highly defensive and offensive features that allow it to pack quite a punch.

The car’s 13cm-thick windows are bulletproof with the driver’s window being the only one that can be opened, and just by 8cm. The doors are 20cm-thick and as heavy as a Boeing 757 cabin door.
The entire passenger cabin can be sealed off, making it airtight in the event of a chemical attack and emergency oxygen supply is available.

Reinforced with Kevlar, The Beast’s tyres are resistant to punctures and steel rims enable the vehicle to keep moving even when the tyres deflate.

The fuel tank is armour-plated and encased in a protective foam to withstand crashes and small-arms fire while a steel plate runs underneath the car to protect the chassis system from bomb and grenade blasts.

Should direct armed confrontation become a problem, The Beast also comes with pump-action shotguns and tear gas cannons for agents inside to lay down some fire. Bumper-mounted tear gas grenade launchers help to keep pesky attackers at bay.

    Surely that's mm's?

Kim's gonna suffer a bit of loss of face if he turns up with his version of security motorcade. And childish Trump will revel in it.

Why would it be a loss of face the opposite I would think.

It shows that Trump is far more scared of being attacked than Kim, after all how many US presidents have been killed or shot at compared to North Korean leaders.

Of course it's a loss of face if Trump's toys are bigger and better than his, and in this case, by a country mile.
Recall Trump's "my button is bigger than yours" childish retort.
They're both the same in this sense, needing to show off.
There's also the aspect of "I am important so I need to be protected to the utmost". Less protection = less important... at least in their eyes.

THat was my first thought too. But apparently it is in fact centimetres.

    From Wikipedia :

It has more 5-inch (130 mm)-thick bulletproof glass than the previous model, and only the window at the driver's seat opens (to pay tolls)

It'd be a bugger if they couldn't get to the meeting because they didn't have change for the toll booth.

    No and those windows on that are not glass either. But in retrospect it probably could not take a direct hit. So I will concede that. Cool link;

You really think Kim doesnt know what the US has ?
He has never been into oneupmanship only wanting a response capability that could cause enough damage in retaliation to an attack that would make any potential attacker think twice before attacking him.

He will be laughing his tits off at the huge convoy particularly when the US media has been saying he is terrified of going there, as in 'look who is the scared one'
