Britain’s new dark blue passports, leading to criticism from some Brexiters who had heralded the change of colour as a symbol of the benefits of leaving the EU.Gemalto, a security company based in Paris, is expected to win a tender process ahead of the UK’s De La Rue, one person briefed on the decision said. De La Rue currently holds the contract for producing UK passports, worth £490m over 10 years.

Both the Sun and Daily Telegraph newspapers reported the news on Wednesday evening. Bill Cash, a pro-Brexit MP, said the decision was “incongruous to say the least” and “symbolically completely wrong”.“The irony is unreal,” said Eloise Todd, chief executive of Best for Britain, the anti-Brexit campaign group .

The Home Office said the procurement process was ongoing, adding: “We do not require passports to be manufactured in the UK. A proportion of blank passport books are currently manufactured overseas, and there are no security or operational reasons why this would not continue.”Recommended

Yes seemed incredible but don't shoot the messenger same story all over the press.I suspect it was leaked to get De La Rue ( the British !! firm the contract)

As I understand it, the company who it's believed will be awarded the contract (Gemalto), already has 5 operations in the UK, with, again if awarded, will add 70 jobs to their operations at Fareham and Heywood. I think it also worth noting that the contract is for the printing of passports only. The insertion of biometric data and issuing administration will continue to be carried out solely in the UK. Apparently, DeLaRue's tender came in at 120 million pounds more than the successful bid.

Sorry, this issue to taking nationalistic sentiment too far. If the UK is going to succeed as a forthcoming 'global' nation, and there is the desire to strike a free trade agreement with the EU, this should be held as an example of the UK's outlook.
