Double pricing in Thailand -rip off the farang!

Well there's much said about the two tier pricing system here but I've yet to come across much of it to be honest.

I had it the other day on the train to Kanchanaburi (100B for 'foreigners') but that's about it really. Ok there's always the 'overcharge' you sometimes get like the fucking bitch who stitched me up 20B on the way home tonight for my bit of raw fish , but that's dealable with.

Anyone got any real classic examples of blatant farang rip off rates?

oh yes, they did want farang to pay 200B to see the waterfall near Kanchanaburi as well but I couldn't be arsed to go anyway.

Top of my list is the crocodile farm in Samut Prakan.
It's something like 4-5 times for a farang!!
I think locals pay 60 baht and whitey pays 300, (but don't quote me on that!)
My missus bought 3 tickets and when we tried to get in they sent her back to upgrade my ticket.
The place is an utter shithole!
Safari World as well but not as extortionate.

Anywhere along Suk they'll try it. I got done 20 baht for a coconut in pratunam the day after the missus paid 5baht.
I see it all the time when there's no price list posted.
Yet a scummy little Karaoke will sell you beers at dead cheap prices.

The best is the grand palace and the temple next to it (what's its name?), nothing for thais and 200 baht I think for foreigners. Why wife was somehow perplexed when I told her I had to buy a ticket.

I think CM Zoo has two prices to see the pandas.....not sure though as I've never been. Anyhows, these things don't bother me - if that's the way it is, that's the way it is - If I am unhappy about it I don't have to go. What I do hate is being overcharged which is different. I don't care if it's 1B, it makes my blood boil......It really doesn't help in keeping my new year's resolution of not getting stressed-out......In fact I'm getting a little bit stressed just thinking about it......'Fish in a Pond.......Fish in a Pond'....

Actually I think over the next couple of years or so the thailand rip offs will become common knowledge, december I had quite a few friends over from the uk and that and they were touring around Thailand as tourists do, and the conversation would follow this sort of line.

dd; so how did you enjoy Koh Chang/the grand palace/where ever?

friend; ahhh it was brilliant, although the cnuts ripped me off at the waterfall/where ever.

every single time they had known they had been ripped off, they didn't like it, but they mentioned it, therefore the odds are they will mention it back in their home countries. all good advertising for thailand.

Some waterfall up inKhaow Yai 20 baht for Thais 200 for farang. Pissed me off fucking righteously. Saw the sign startng bithcing at the ol' lady (in Thai) tellin' turn this fucking thing arond fuck them! blah gaurd walks up asks if I speak Thai. 20 baht.

Walked up two-hundred ninety fucking stairs to see the temple atop Doi Suthep. Now there ain't so sign at the bottom. At the top; BiggO sign, "Foreigners ~ 30B" Was guckin' steamin' over that one. Why the fuck couldn't they tell BEFORE I walked up all them fuckin' stairs??? Couple of Thais told me mai phen rai, just in! Fuck it, was the principal of the thing, never went in.

I don;t mind paying a fee where Thais might get in free, Like Wat pra kaeow, It's a tourism thing and for the Thais it's a pilgrimage; 200 baht seems a bit steep. I've been once, enough. But 200 baht for some ratty, littered up, weak-assed waterfall?

For the most part I pay same as most Thais. It's them tourist areas where farang that haven't a clue seem to congregate that's it's bad. My personal war with the tuk-tuk drivers here stems form this general lack of respect farang get. Mostly because the tourists are so fuckin' easy.

The zoo at the top of pata, pinklao. 200 baht for foreigners, 20 baht for Thai. The sign is written in Thai which I read and then complained in thai to the ticket seller but she wouldnt change her mind so I sent the nieces (thai) in and I waited outside for them,
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

I agree with the 'overcharging' thing - that just winds me up

Like last night on my way home from work paying DOUBLE for a fucking stick of side of the road squid- this was not in a tourist area and it must have been pretty obvious to the vendor - just ' oh look white-man , lets rip the fucker off because he must be so rich'

    yeah, that pisses me off.....

If you've got a work permit, they will charge you the Thai price at all national parks and zoos and other nice places.
At least i've never known them not to.

How much do Thai men have to pay for hookers?

I've seen Thai men in go-gos down Nana - do you think they get a better deal? - I'll complain to the Ministry if they get it for less .

If I am paying taxes - which I do - I feel that dual pricing is a rip-off, which it is.

surely if you're working in Thailand for a Thai firm then it's a rip-off.

Can you see shops in England with signs on the tills ' CHINKY GOOKS and IMMIGRANTS pay 300% more ' - I think not - that's what this is all about.

Not at the crocodile farm apparently!

dirtydog will be here shortly to tell us his experiences.

I often explain to Thais in my classes that if an Aussie shopkeeper charged a different price for foreigners that the shopkeeper would be charged with breaking a law.

I think it would be somehow more equitable if the pricing system was genuinely based on income as opposed to the presumption that Jonny foreigner can afford to and therefore should pay more.
there's no doubt that these rich Thai fekers in their big 4 by 4's have a lot more money than me. Why don't they have to pay double?

Anyway, I've never had a problem with the work permit. Been to about 10 national parks and always paid Thai prices.
    i don't like crocodiles.

I got to say that I was disappointed to read that they are now charging 100 baht on the Krung Thep to Kanchanaburi train. I used to use that service all the time at around 8 baht (from memory).
In every country around the world you expect to pay more in airports and tourist areas (though I cant think why) but the way it is applied here in Thailand is out of line. I suppose they will charge what they can get away with. If the Tourist Authority were clever they would step in with a policy to regulate what falang pay. The other problem of course is the holiday maker who happily hands over whatever they are asked for coz to them its nickles and dimes anyway compared to their home currency.

In Thailand, folks have noted race. And the racial element may be the case in LOS, as well as just being a foreigner.

In 'Nam, I see it as a "foreigner" thing. What gets ridiculous is that the locals even try to charge me 3x and 4x or more for a piece of bread. Yes, a piece of bread. And this is in my own neighborhood and they know I live here. And, I've always been polite and respectful to the vendors in my own neighborhood.

    Now we have expats who:

pay taxes to a government which provides nothing

    pay rent

pay dual prices at a minimum

    And let's add,

pay a deadbeat-bum wife and pay for her deadbeat family, by sending money to them every month.

    That's what I call, priceless

I've heard Vietnam is the pits for this but then what do you expect when the white man's spent 40 years trying to bomb the fuck out of them.

Are you talking solely about Vietnam or Thailand as well?

Can't see the point in sending money to the wife's family - tell her family to fuck off ......

Afew years ago, I said I would help the missus out and take a few nieces and nephews who were visiting fron under her feet by going for a splash at the water park thingie at Central, bang Na.

had to pay for them(peanuts) and ten times what Thais pay for my self. TEN TIMES. I would have walked away but the kids were so excited that I couldn't really take them away when they were in sight of it already. I happened to have a photocopy of me workpermit in my wallet and the bitch wouldn't even look at it.

the work permit worked only once for me and that was getting onto Kho Samet.

I can't imagine any offical pricing difference being operated in the UK. We're so consumed with guilt about the bad things we have done throughout history that if we did it would be set such that the indigenous population would pay more.....And quite right too I say.....

    I hope you're joking !

I think it's fair enough to give locals better rates on certain things to protect the economy etc.. but if a farang has to pay 10 times or even 2 times the cost then the service/goods should be better in accordance.

I mean it's not the farang's fault that he's richer - start overcharging too much and everyone will gradually holiday elsewhere.

I reckon Thailand's not too bad on this front - some places are far worse (ie Peru , Cambodia) but it's still wrong.

why not just state : KUNTS Pay more!

I remember there was a thread on Ajarn a while back that suddenly vanished - ' You Farang, you pay more!'

never had a chance to read it before one of the wankers there deleted it - anyone claim responsibilty for it or want to re-hash its jist...?

I have certainly seen examples of visitors being charged more than locals in small shops in the some of the more primitive parts of the UK. When queried the shopkeepers reply seemed to imply that visitors should feel it a privilege to be allowed to shop there at all.
