Thread: Moving back to your home country

Just wondering if anyone here as returned back to their home country after living abroad for many years. I believe many of you have returned to the U.K or Australia. How was the readjustment? Do you ever wish you didn't go back?

I've been thinking of maybe returning to Canada if I get a good job. I tried to go back to my home country once and lived there for a 1.5 years before coming to China. It was hard to adjust back to Canada after being away so long. The job situation back home made it tough to find a good full-time job.

Any thoughts?

Why go back to whatever gave you reason to leave in the first place? Chances are you won't be happy.

Well this is an honest question and it is a real thing called reverse culture shock. Many people who return take time to readjust. I think Slap did quite a few threads upon returning to the UK.

Anyway, maybe wrong crowd, but if anyone did go back, I'd like to hear how you adjusted or not.

Going back and adjusting to your home country is far easier than going and adjusting to China or any Asian country.

Never left or ran away from anything, so this point is moot.

Spent 3 years in Oz and 7 In Spain, sometimes regret leaving Oz.

Yeah, but there is always a change and readjustment when you go back to your roots. As I mentioned, I went back for a year and a half and then came back to Asia. I think because I didn't get a full-time teaching job at the time, I came back abroad. I think it would be really hard after being abroad for 12 years to readjust, but certainly plausible as I still have many friends back there.

^Yes, it is difficult as you are used to a certain lifestyle abroad.. at least for me I am able to travel quite often and easily. I also meet people from all over the world who are also in the same type of lifestyle. I find the people back home haven't changed much, and it can be quite boring after awhile..especially compared to a place like Asia/China!

Well who knows. I think about going back mostly because of my future. Future retirement savings and future lifestyle. Mother is now old, single and broke, so I feel like she needs me near.

^^^haha.. there are pros and cons that's for sure. I am not sure right now, just kind of thinking out loud. I have an interview for a job in Canada soon.. i'll see how it goes. If I could find a good job, I'd go back in a heartbeat. It may take time, but that's okay.

Yes, lots of adjusting, huh? When I went to Canada last year, I used to feel like I was in a ghost town in my home city which has only 48,000 people. Compared to Shanghai, or even Bangkok, where you see people out all the time with heavy traffic and loud people.... ghost town sounds like an accurate description.
