A British pensioner reported missing by his friend has been found safe and well on Wednesday camping on a remote uninhabited island in the Gulf Of Thailand.
Michael Smith, 74, had set off on a canoe to explore the islands off the coast of Chumphon but when he failed to return after two days his friend became concerned and reported him as missing to local police.
A search party of divers and volunteers were assembled and sent on a mission to find Mr Smith.
Within an hour the speedboat carrying the search party spotted a foreigner camping on Chorakae island, a small uninhabited island about 7 miles from the coast.
The rescue team went ashore to find this was their missing man and asked him to return to the mainland with them as his friend were concerned for his well-being.
Mr Smith refused the offer of a lift telling the rescuers he fancied another night on the island and he’d return to Chumphon tomorrow.
Watcharin Suwapit, chief of maritime rescue unit, told Mr Smith his team would come back Thursday to escort him to shore. He also asked local fishermen to keep an eye on the old fella overnight until his team returned.
