In memory of the world tragedy 1914-18

Canadian soldier wrote in memory of his fallen comrade

    In Flanders Fields

    BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

    In Flanders fields.

I used to have a job at a calendar factory.
    I got the sack because
I took a couple of days off.

    The Battle near Saarburg

The earth’s getting mouldy in the fog.
    The evening weighs like lead.
    Round about ring electric explosions
and, whimpering, everything breaks in two.

    Like old rags the villages
    smoulder on the horizon.
    I lie God-forlorn
    in the cackling frontline.

Many little copper birds from the enemy
    Swirl round heart and head.
I brace hard against the grey
    And face death squarely.

    Alfred Lichtenstein.

Good pick Bob and his talent felled in the first montrhs of the great war

Der einzige Trost ist: traurig sein. Wenn die Traurigkeit in Verzweiflung ausartet, soll man grotesk werden. Man soll spaßeshalber weiter leben. Soll versuchen, in der Erkenntnis, dass das Dasein aus lauter brutalen, hundsgemeinen Scherzen besteht, Erhebung zu finden.
The only solace: be sad! If sadness becomes despair: be grotesque! Be a clown, trying to find one's amusement by recognizing that existence consists of sheer brutal and shabby strokes.
