    Should farang shout at Thais?

I thought about asking this after watching the vid where the Aussie got KO'd by the Thai guy. I go cycling 20km 4 times a week. There's rarely a day where I'm not cut up or nearly knocked off me bike. I'm kinda short tempered and I let it be known that I'm not happy. My missus, who goes with me, keeps telling me not to shout at people.
After showing her the video she now doesn't want me to go cycling anymore. She reckons it's only a matter of time before someone will retaliate. What do you reckon?

You're challenging your environment. That's not smart, Darwinianally speaking....

    As much as possible.
    Gets their attention.

[and some will always be Farang/newbies, regardless of their time here - as they remain clueless and disconnected]

I think it's fair to point shit behaviour out to anyone.

Odds are against us here though if one against several.

Last time I had a problem was in a 7 in BKK.

Bloke kicked off and I headbutted him.

Next thing three came at me with bottles.

Managed to dodge one, one stayed where he was, and I smashed a shelf full of goods into the third one as he came at me.

After the shelf smashed into the last one they all ran off.

I was lucky, could have got killed.

I won't take shit off people though.
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.

The eyes are useless when the mind is blind.

My Mary's reminds me not to shout at Thais because the second you raise your voice you are in the WRONG .
When my Thai brother in law asks me with a smile to lend ( give) him 6000 pounds to pay off his debts, I start shouting.
Apparently that puts me in the wrong.

    Don't shout.

Set up an acid sprayer from the end of your handlebars.

If they come too close, give the side of their car a bit of a squirt.

    Simple.

    Saves face all round.

Saves you from hunting them down and poisoning their dogs during the night.

Agree with you Wasabi. I ask my missus how the fcuk do I avoid an accident if I don't make known where I am? I had a couple of experiences with my missus where I've had to sound my car horn to avoid accidents. My missus tells me to not sound the horn at them. 'Why' I ask? Her reply was 'because they don't like it'.

    I don't shout.

I just avoid most instances where I think I'll end up getting annoyed with the locals.

    Thank god for Lazada.

Some people can cope with and integrate better than others.

Some of the locals can NOT deal with losing face, especially by a *gasp* foreigner. And that's kinda understandable.

One of the reasons I plan to move back home. I like to jog, but don't like dog bites by feral dogs. Don't like insane drivers who have no qualms with clipping a pedestrian with their side mirrors. Better I avoid those things, otherwise I'll lose my shit.

My wife is the same, especially in BKK. Reason being, understandably, road rage by the locals. They'll follow you, intimidate, force off the road, shoot at you etc... unlikely, yes, but it happens ALOT.

    People are crazy.

I went jogging this evening. A car driver drove right towards me as if I wasn't there (he was pulling in to park but was still doing about 20mph). If I'd continued running where I was, he would have smashed right into me, so I just moved over and let him do his thing. There was no point getting angry or making a scene. It would have spoiled my run.

    "Should farang shout at Thais?"

well, just like in the uk or the states, it matters whether you're hanging around trailer trash/chavs like living with some country bumkins upcountry or living in pattaya.

the last time i had a thai shout at me (and i shouted back, btw) was in the days before taxi meters.

My missus has always said to me after hearing of a farang getting turned over . 'I don't know why you farangs want to come to Thailand for.' Bless her.

i don't know the reason, but thais don't generally honk their horns in bkk (except a short "beep beep") to get moving at a traffic light.

    and, I LOVE IT.

bkk is much quieter than many cities inthe world (especially india) because of the lack of honking horns (i walk to work after taking a motorcyce taxi every morning to the bts).

Just the sound of metal on metal sends those mangy mutts whimpering for the horizon.

Used to carry a telescopic baton for that purpose and was once rounding a corner on a quiet soi when it flicked open a tad and caught again in my pocket as I'd come off the curb.

The early AM Thai speed walker ahead of me nearly had a coronary while checking his 6:00.

I just use the treadmill now. Plus I don't have to deal with being a spectacle for the locals. I cant jog with my earbuds outdoors here because I cant hear anything coming up behind me or dogs barking or anything that would indicate I need to look out.

It's all about the duration of the blast. A quick parp is ok. Sit on the horn for 3 seconds and you've insulted him.
The times I've done a prolonged blast of the horn, the other guy has always stopped and confronted me. Since I only use the horn when the other person is in the wrong, I always stand my ground when confronted. But in standing my ground, I stay polite and confident and don't shout. Has worked so far.

If it's not a horn situation, I don't shout, per se, but do raise my voice and swear if they're being an idiot. But, as mentioned above, when it comes to a face to face, I keep a reasonable tone and don't back off. It's amazing how ending each sentence with "krap" works wonders in placation and no loss of face for me.
But then, I'm not a 76 kg overweight runt with a smartarse attitude.

See, I would have said a loud "fuck you [at][at][at][at]". It's a matter of principle. I said it this very morning in a soi off Silom where there is a morning market. Arrogant cnut in a nice car drove up through the soi, not because he was going somewhere in the soi, but shopping. He indicated and swerved in to park where I was walking. I believe he should not have been driving through the soi at all while it was a market. Lazy and arrogant fcuker. He just barely sideswiped me because I kept walking without giving way. I said in a loud voice, "Fcuken [at][at][at][at], don't fkcun drive so close". He ignored me. I kept walking and looked back and mouthed "fcuk you" to him, and he turned away, not wanting a confrontation, but I'm sure he got the message.
They know when they're in the wrong, and as long as he ignores you, he doesn't lose face, but at the same time he's seething inside.
