    Drone Pics and Video thread.

Thought I would start a thread for anyone into drone flying (doesn't matter what brand) and wants to post up some pics/video's.

Here are a few still pics. I have been messing with my Camera and settings on my Mavic. These are shot at 2.7k.

This in Lampang as I was looking across the valley from the temple at the mountain top. Tricky flying as it was quite windy

Looking back at the temple, Was a difficult pic due to haze and sun in back ground. This was at 75 meters up

This was right after take off looking across at the valley

View of Downtown Ko Kha. This is the river that runs right near our house.

I will work later on a video hosting site for some videos. I will not use YouTube.

May be you could do a write up for the beginner? Recommended craft, cameras etc. I thought about one as my son's of an age where he'll want one soon.
What puts me off getting one is the guy down the road who bought one for his son but lost it the same day when it came down in the local high school.

Here is a link to a Drone review from PC Mag.

    https://www.pcmag.com/roundup/337251/the-best-drones

I have owned 3 different Drones in the last 6 years. I currently own a Mavic Pro and it is not cheap but it is compact and easy to fly.

The Spark from DJI is new and less in price.

I had considered the Go Pro Karma because I could just install my Hero 5. However it had negative reports and other numerous issues so I stuck with DJI products.

I think the key point is that you get what you pay for and cheap drones have numerous issues and can create liability issues if you were to crash one etc.

Surely it's better to learn on a cheapie first, before crashing an expensive one?

Not really as some of the cheaper ones have a mind of their own.

I also have a mavic pro and it is damn easier to fly than the parrot drone I had before.

Do you import your drones or do you buy them in Thailand?

I read Thai customs are quite out there when it comes to importing dronez.

The one I bought my son works perfectly well if it has a short battery life though we have spare batteries for him. and the camera and video work well.

Absolutely. You get what you pay for. I have flown some real junk. The software is bad, control is limited. Its a waste of money IMHO

I would just buy it here. There are a few places that sell them in BKK and of course off Lazada. Buy the bundle if you buy the Mavic. Comes with extra batteries, props, car charger and case. I bought mine in the US and brought with me. You will hear lots of stuff about Thai law and drone flying. It all boils down to common sense.

A word of travel advice. NEVER say when asked "its a Drone". I have been asked at a few custom locations (Taiwan and Thailand) upon arrival and I say its my Aerial Camera. Keep it simple.

I have lots of advice about flying here or anywhere.

    Couple of quick comments

    • Fly discrete. Do not try and fly in open areas with lots of people

    • Fly with common sense. If at a big tourist spot keep your flights short and controlled.

    • Learn how to fly your drone well before doing a photo shoot somewhere.

Sadly Drones have a really bad rep. Some people take offense them altogether as they worry about their invasion of privacy. When I flew up at the temple on the mountain there was a Thai guy with a DJI Phantom 4. I did my flight 3 mins, he did his flight in about 5. Some old westerner was with his wife and he started his bitching and moaning. "Drone this, Drone that...I didn't walk all the way up here to hear a drone flying around". FFS, both of us were done in 10 minutes tops. My wife just laughed and said why do Foreigners always complain. Thais will not complain. . Most Thais when I have flown are very curious, especially the kids

    will try,
Imgur sizes and TD reduces with option to click to full size. Mine at 2.7k was 4000 x3000. Try it. Be curious. I stopped still pics at 4k 2.7k seemed better

For video I prefer 1080p60 for the ability to produce smooth pans. 25fps or 30fps max frame rate on the higher resolutions (2.7/4k) is just too slow for aerial video IMO.

Did you rip these from the video or take individual snaps? I've found that ripping stills from the video yields a better image. No idea why.

As for Pragmatic's question of what to get, get a DJI. If you don't want to spend a lot, try to find a Phantom 3 Pro (discontinued, but maybe somebody has dead stock). Don't know how old your son is or what he's like so hard to advise whether he's likely to crash it. Some kids are used to more rugged R/C toys. This thing is durable if flown as intended but not rugged at all.

DJI drones are stable and easy to fly. Most crashes or close calls are from errors in judgment rather than lack of controller skills. I've flown mine about 50-60 times and brought it too close to trees a couple of times due to zoning out in the heat or whatever but other than that no mishaps and it's still 'like new'.

Great pics and great idea for a thread... probably better moving it to the art and entertainment sub forum though as it will soon get buried here in the lounge under a mountain of dross.

Thanks. I will post more. Hoping more add to it.

Looking for a Vid site to host. Do not want to use YouTube. They are not private. Not that I am posting anything personal but still.

I can host off the GoPro site but their site is a lot of work. What I do not care for is that almost all sites want to link you to Fagbook. Not all of us are Narcissist fkrs that want a Like from people. We just want to share and not be judged by it.

This morning, from 60 metres above.

    Just a typical Sydney suburb.

Why is it so hard to hang one of these from a drone?

Someone had one earlier this year and apparently it couldn't be done without fabricating a special bracket. It's a standard camera mount.

^ What is the farthest away you have flown your drown? Also how does buildings, hills and natural obstacles affect the range?

And what does it do if it gets no signal due to being out of range ?

I do believe that it has onboard GPS and flies home.
