    Farang or westerner

    Farang means westerner.

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dict...lish/westerner a person who comes from a country in the western part of the world, especially North America or western Europe:

Why do so many use the transliteration of the Thai word instead of the English word, when we don't for other words?

    It's not hard ,

Most Thais consider us round eyes are walking talking ATM but to be polite the Farang word will do.

    Fair enough really.

Yeah I know why they use the Thai word, it's because they're Thai. Why do we use it when we're (mostly) English speakers and have a perfectly good English language equivalent?

I don't mind being called a 'farang' but I hate the fact they talk about you right in front of your face. They're not discrete and they fcuking ignorant. Good night.

    ^^We're what? Westerners.

Do we refer to ourselves as 'people' on the forum, or 'kon'?

    transliteration?

Let me ask you a yes/no question.

Do you mean, why do so many expats in Thailand use the Thai word "farang," rather than 'westerner,' in their daily goings on including forum posts??

Just laugh it off and accept that you are far superior in all ways.

Yes (when we don't use other Thai words when we have an English one).

Ok, Ill resort back to the "because it is a word that signifies who we are."

Are you familiar with the existence of an occurrence in psycholinguistic theory loosely called "capturing the term"? There's a more scientific approach (with terminology) surrounding it, but it escapes me now.

It's akin to african americans' usage of the word nigger.
Asian americans' use and misuse of chink, etc., etc.

I don't believe anything like thai expats' use of farang has ever been published. At least that I can find.

Be the first. It would probably cause quite a few hard-ons across Thai fora given your (apparent) history of scholarly attempts in this area.

I used to love the Thai family calling my kids farang because they couldn't pronounce their names.

Perhaps it adds a little je ne sais quoi to the dialogue.

Ad hominem attacks on those who use it will not advance your cause.

It's a direct translation from Thai, เหมือน เหมือน กัน. It illustrates word doubling, a common form of emphasis in the Thai language, you fucking tourist!

Been called Falang many times but never Farang.

I use neither Farang, Falang or Westerner when talking about others.

Personally I have been called a lot worse. Call me anything you like but don't call me late for lunch.
    O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
