African Big Game Hunter vs Nellie the Elephant

Big game hunter crushed to death by elephant as it collapses on top of him after being fatally shot

A professional big game hunter is dead after he was crushed by a wounded elephant as it was fatally shot.

Theunis Botha, 51, was on a hunt in Gwai, Zimbabwe, when his group was charged by four breeding elephants.

A female elephant picked up Botha in her trunk after he fired at the others and collapsed on top of him - crushing him to death - after she was shot by another hunter.

Heartbroken friends described the married father-of-five as a "legend", while opponents of big game hunting offered little sympathy following his passing.

The late Mr Botha ran his own safari company out of South Africa. From the article I can't readily ascertain which hunting rights his party obtained for this Zimbabwe expedition.

Certain species of animals are culled to allow other species (humans inclusive) to thrive. I cannot believe his party had hunting rights to cull mating elephants. An experienced expedition 'legend' would know better than to approach the herd during rutting.
Condolences though all hunting expeditions have an ingredient of danger involved.
    (Just ask Custer ;-)

    Possibly just karma, eh.

    Edit: Mr Botha

Its actually a complicated question. Hunting wild life can bring a lot of currency to quite poor places. As you correctly note, for some animals, culling is required to keep the population at a sustainable level (but definitely NOT mating elephants I would have thought as well). These two things potentially match very well.

However, on a personal level, I can't help but feeling that anyone who goes after endangered wildlife for "sport" or "pleasure" is a douche. Pure and simple.

Indeed. I suppose I could be persuaded to change my mind.

To prospective hunter after paying : OK. Here is you traditional African spear, here is your belt knife and loin cloth. Leave everything else here. You have 3 days, happy hunting.

Oh, and do us a favour and pop on this GPS tracking anklet so we know where to come find your body.

Best just to read Wilbur Smith's Assegai to get a feel for becoming a "big game expedition leader", eh.

A fair way of doing things would be to put all the big game hunters in a huge cage, give em a bag of smarties for protection and let the lions loose.
