Thread: A couple of days in BKK

Having spent 3 weeks doing voluntary work in Cambo, my mate is coming to BKK in late June for 3 days. One of which will be spent having Dental work done at the Smile Dental clinic in Silom (13.728139, 100.535936).
It's his first visit to BKK.
Any recommendations for reasonably priced but comfortable accommodation in that area?
Secondly he's asked me about BKK tours?
You know the kind of thing; all the city sites in a day without getting ripped off kinda thing.
I've no idea cos I avoid BKK like the plague, but if anyone knows of a reputable company that does a day tour of the city it would be good to help my mate out.

Whilst it is indeed an interesting idea I think not. He's a confirmed atheist and I think the more famous sites of BKK, the ones that everyone has to do sort of thing might be the go.

Just to add that I know there are loads of tours on the net but if anyone has personal experience and can recommend it would be great.

The 24th he's seeing the Dental people.
I'll be coming back to BKK from Darwin on the 24th and my wife will come down from CR so we'll meet up with him then.

25th is free and our wedding anniversary so I reckon it'll dinner on a boat or a skyscraper.

We'll all fly back to our respective home on the 26th.

A tour of bkk would be traffic torture. A trip on the river is essential. You could lunch at Lord Jim's buffet at The Oriental. Don't miss the foie gras.

He'll know about the Grand Palace and whether or not he's keen, I suppose.

Best not to book any tours until the dental is over.

Right. Hire a longtail and do a klong tour. Stop at Wat Arun.

Go to the Grand Palace by taxi. Maybe Chinatown for dinner.

Walking and shopping Silom and Sukhumvit at night.

Thailand Cultural Center has a show.

You're right a boat is definitely the way to go.
Especially for me.

Maybe Lord Jim's for dinner on the 25th?

Still over a month away.

TD could plan a trip that would include boats, tuk tuks, motocys, taxis, mini vans, buses etc etc

More expensive.

We had the seafood buffet in the evening once.

No complaints, but prefer the place for lunch.

Canal Tour.
A day trip to Ayudtaya.
Grand Palace.
State Tower roof top for dinner.

I've taken it several times acting as a tour guide for visiting friends. Bus up to Ayudtaya early morning back afternoon by boat with buffet. Highly recommended.

He should stay in the Atlanta Hotel, they know how to keep the riff raff out.

I'm sure they are OK but you can't see anything! Outside is dark and inside or desk is illuminated so wrecks one's night vision.

They are pretty sweet, actually. And I'm an anti-tour kinda' guy, typically.

The last time I went (maybe 2 years ago), the food was top notch (if fine dining/fusion is your thing), the host was a genteel bloke who had worked as a writer for Natl. Geo and spent many years in SEA doing various NGO type stuff. Man was breathing knowledge on every historic and modern site we drifted by.

Had no problem with this. As I'm sure you know, Wat Arun, etc. have spectacular night-time light set ups...

There was one single table at the back (away from the hordes)...perfecto. (exhaust wasn't an issue)

My colleagues booked one once for new recruits. It's worth doing for newbies...if it's not pissing down as it was that evening.

Many sights like Wat Arun are lit, of course.
