Qantas chief Alan Joyce hit with pie in face

The chief executive of Australian airline Qantas has had a speech interrupted by a man who shoved a pie in his face.

Alan Joyce was addressing a business breakfast in Perth when a man strode to the stage and surprised him.

Mr Joyce had been discussing the airline's recent decision to operate non-stop flights from London to Perth.

"I don't know what that was about," he told the audience of about 500 people.

Joyce has said he intends to press charges against a man who hit him in the face with a pie.

A man who smashed a lemon meringue pie into the face of QANTAS chief executive Alan Joyce yesterday during a business forum in Perth says he wanted to make a statement about same-sex marriage.

Tony Overheu, a former farmer, walked onto the stage and launched the pie at Mr Joyce while he was addressing a crowd of about 500 people at a Hyatt business breakfast.

Police have charged the 67-year-old with providing false details, but Mr Joyce told reporters today he intended to press assault charges.

"The police are continuing their investigation and my intention is to send a message that this type of behaviour isn't acceptable and that I will have every intention of pressing charges," he said.

"I have every intention to continue to be vocal on those social and community issues.

"I'm a big believer in the great Australian expression a fair government it's all about giving people equality.
"Qantas has always spoken up on gender issues, on LGBTI issues, on Indigenous issues and we will continue to do so and no attempt at bullying us into suppressing our voice will work."
"It's important for our shareholders, our employees, and our customers. It's called good corporate social responsibility.

F*ck off Joyce ... you don't speak for me.

    Well done that Farmer.

The ring is incomplete, representing the "gap" in equality between same-sex couples and their heterosexual peers. In a series of video advertisements, straight allies are encouraged to wear the rings "until we all belong".

"They're showing us that their commitment to the issue is deepening. They know this is good for their employees, it is good for their customers and it is good for Australia."

    Story

Are we really to believe that Multinational Corporate Entities have the core issue at heart?

Or, more likely, they see this a movement which differentiates themselves from others and shows they have a compassionate heart to Social Issues. The Advertising Companies have a term for it ... 'point of difference marketing'*

    FFS ... Banks with a heart ...

A final quote from the story above which is a little closer to the truth ...

"The 5000 staff at Qantas who lost their jobs a few years ago and the 200 staff who lost their jobs at ANZ Bank last year would be very disappointed to learn those companies couldn't afford to keep them but have the money for these types of campaigns.

Senator Abetz said Australians should have no doubt campaigns on same-sex marriage were funded by higher prices and job losses.

"I think Australians are getting fed up with some big business CEOs constantly trying to wave their PC credentials rather than getting on and delivering the services consumers expect at a reasonable price," he said.

    * Point of difference. Point of difference refers to the factors of goods or services that establish differentiation. Differentiation is the way in which the goods or services of a company differ from its competitors. Indicators of the point of difference's success would be increased customer benefit and brand loyalty.

^ I guess my first reaction would be - did my workmates play a joke on me?

then after realizing it was a random stranger, my 1/32 Maori blood would boil and I would go ape-shit on his ass...

At least he didn't suffer the indignity of having a dildo chucked in his face ey?

    remember that one?

I remember reading the original story about Qantas and the ring and thinking it was a bit strange a flagship corporation getting involved in a contentious political issue - especially since Alan Joyce is gay.

I think it is out of order to use his position as CEO to hijack the corporation machinery to promote his political agenda.

Getting a bit sick of OZ companies bending over and being so PC over the gay rights
marriage etc, running shit scared of some activists demonstrating outside or on social media, they all fold like wet paper bags.
Joyce is a bit of a dick in pressing charges against this silly old religious locker.

I sort of agree with you, but lets be realistic, none of the CEO's of any of the top 1000 corporations in the world are in their position because of altruism. Any CEO would, overtly or covertly, advance his/her personal agendas.

    Don't think so;

    Alan Joyce and Shane Lloyd

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is one of the highest paid executives in the country on a salary of $5 million, something that is fully disclosed. But to date he has remained shy about revealing the identity of his partner, Shane Lloyd, one-time David Jones men's wear salesman and works for the children’s charity, Starlight Foundation. The couple, both openly gay, have been in a long-term relationship since 1999.

They frequent Sydney parties together but try to avoid the mainstream press as a rule — New Zealand-born Lloyd is said to prefer keeping their private life, well, private.

The couple have made their home in the Irish-influenced The Rocks.

By the way, both my brother and sister in law who have worked for Qantas for nigh on 20 years say Joyce is the most hated man in the company. They hold him personally responsible for the decline in staff morale and service that Qantas has experienced over the last few years.

Nothing like taking the piss out of Alan Joyce with the pie facial.
The Irish deeply offended CEO of Qantas has banned the the anti corporate support
for gay marriage pie thrower,Tony Overheu from all Qantas and partner airlines including
Jetstar,Cathay Pacific and Emirates with a life time ban.
The old bible thumper probably has not caught a plane for years but it has not stopped
nancy boy being a complete dick in more ways than one with this ban.

On what grounds? I thought one would have to cause a fracas on board a plane to elicit a ban..
