    The stresses of modern life

Lately I've had to phone a few government departments and large organizations.

Perhaps 80% of the time, I get some woman who, instead of having a back and forth conversation and allowing me to ask questions, starts talking over the top of me.

Now, my phone manner is pretty inoffensive and self-deprecating (though I say so myself). I'm not a terribly assertive guy, and certainly don't talk over the top of them. But I'm so tired of city people doing this. It seems to be that population pressure and and the economic stress of a reduced workforce which have created people who are overworked and stressed-out, and to be fair, perhaps themselves tired of dealing with boofheads who call up and ramble on, wasting their time.

But really....I'm over it. It's difficult when you start to say something and they just bulldoze right on over the top of you. People didn't use to be like this a few years ago. Have other people noticed this mannerlessness ?

To make it worse, they often have the same type of controlling voice.

Dear God, make it stop and get me back to Thailand.

    Absolutely.

I just make certain to place the call when I've got plenty of time and absolutely refuse to conclude the call until I've had my questions answered directly.

Often, my first question is: "Can you transfer me to someone who knows how to listen, please?"

One of the functions I LOVE about certain orgs is having a "manned" online chat window. Fidelity (brokerage firm) has one of the most efficient online chat vehicles I've ever come across.

Not the most endearing first question but you did say please.

^ Right Norton. And you'd be surprised.

I've been transferred to someone more inclined to hear my sob story & / or have had that person slow da fuck down and stay on the line.

    Give it a shot

The conversation is being recorded fro "training" purposes so they have to talk to sound knowledgeable.

Maybe listen for 30 seconds and then say " I know this is being recorded for training purposes but could you stop talking for long enough to listen to MY needs and then maybe you can anwer my question or transfer me to some who can"?

Or "I have a question about XXX who is the person in your organization who can help me?"

Modern Life? In older times the stress of feeding the family may have been greater?
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

I preface that with, "I know you're trying to help and I thank you for that, but...".
It never pays to be an arse when the person on the other end actually has some power to fuck you around (losing the call, putting you on hold, etc). The preface clause is conciliatory.

    Green owed, Manaam.

I think I'm undergoing some kind of existential crisis. The city I live in is not bad in many ways but getting much, much more crowded than when I grew up. Traffic can be horrid at rush hour.

The phenomenon I described earlier is just one aspect about modern life which is getting on my nerves.

The stresses of modern... (The stresses of modern life) 10-05-2017 01:26 PM misskit Western people too aggressive now. I like Thais!

I agree, Misskit...it may well just be the aggro.

Yeah? If it has already been made clear that this person has no interest in performing their job, I just file a complaint and move on to the next rep.

Mindless business acumen and desired profits trump any civilised manner.

Most are dumbed-down to the point of non-recognition.
...and they still wonder what's wrong with the picture.

When the useless or rude people on govt or large business phones start ranting i tell them i am recording this call, even though i am not,it certainly makes them get some manners and do the job you rang up about.

Another stressor in modern life (in Australia, at least) which I have noticed a lot of in recent years is many peoples' apparent sense of entitlement.

Simply driving down the road in my hometown, one comes across people, usually in fairly expensive cars, who think that they can drive down the centre of a narrow road and that you will get out of their way. I only mention this because I have encountered it so many times.

Her job is to read her script, she has no leeway from it.

    Sorry, not in the script.

One could of course not dial the call centre.
