AI could translate Dolphin Language by 2021.

    This is pretty cool.

Swedish startup Gavagai AB, a language technology company that originated at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science, has mastered 40 human languages with its language analysis software. Now, researchers from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology are teaming up with Gavagai AB to take on the language of dolphins, in a project undoubtedly focused as much on testing and expanding the system’s capabilities as deciphering the thoughts of dolphins.

The team will monitor bottlenose dolphins in a wildlife park and use Gavagai’s artificial intelligence (AI) language analysis technology to decode the sounds and, if all goes according to plan, compile a dictionary of dolphin language. The team is confident that they’ll be able to do this, thanks not only to the AI capabilities of the Gavagai AB system, but also to the availability of more dolphin data, larger computational resources, and newer recording methods.

“We hope to be able to understand dolphins with the help of artificial intelligence technology,” KTH adjunct professor and Gavagai co-founder Jussi Karlgren said in an interview with Bloomberg. “We know that dolphins have a complex communication system, but we don’t know what they are talking about yet.” Whether Gavagai can convince other researchers in marine biology remains to be seen.

I will take a crazy long range punt and guess that "fish" is featured pretty heavily in their conversations.

I reckon if they dared to let me get 'close enough' to my fishy friends, I could decode their squeals and squeaks - with my top secret method... I speak fluent sheep... blaaaaah

But there is no guarantee that Swedish dolphins speak the same language/dialect that , say, pacific dolphins speak?

hasn't someone already figured out that crows /ravens from different areas speak separate "languages" ?

    Project cancelled.

They just released a statement saying that they blew all their cash trying to crack Thaimeme's posts on TD.

The reasoning was that if they could decode his language, then dolphins should have been a piece of piss.

I knew an acquaintance who was a commercial pilot. On his days off, he would take his boat all around Arabian Gulf waters recording dolphin sound and logging their locations.

He believed that dolphin conversations had a structure, a bit like those strange noises your dial up modem would make when it was establishing a connection.

He did it all the time he worked and, when he was retired, got a sizeable grant from someone to continue his research in the waters off his homeland of New Zealand.

Never heard of him again, but it was certainly an interesting theory, when you think most humans start with an exchange of greetings in their own language.

Nah, it's their accents and local slang that differentiate them.

Like, one crow could say(in crow), "Hoy, you, Harry, you blacky!", while another might say (again, in crow). "..'oi, youse,, 'arry, ya black-'ed!", which would instantly mark one crow out from another, causing class and social distinction and territorial disputes, with a stranger, a "furriner" in their midst.

Even soi dogs recognize other dogs by their vocal tone....they get all wound up at a stranger's bark, wrong accent.
“Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? John 10:34.
