    While researching strokes found this

    Standing on one leg for 20 seconds can predict chance of dementia - Telegraph

    Standing on one leg for 20 seconds can predict chance of dementia
    The inability to stand on one leg for more than 20 seconds is associated with microbleeds and "silent" strokes

    The self administered test may also predict Alzheimer propensity, if I remember it correctly.

    Advice to mahoots do not attempt this on a palenquin

    Doing it with your eyes closed can up your chances of falling over and ending up in Hospital by 50%

    Be back in 20 seconds ....

    I'm back:

    I'm OK. I did 30 seconds on each leg. I could have done more but the medical mission was accomplished so no need for more.

    Not bad fer a young fella, Nervy,

    Did the same test just now, tried it on both legs, one side less wobbly than the other, but pass both times, 30 seconds each.

    The other test, standing for 2 or 3 seconds with eyes closed is a bit tougher, but got to 20 seconds each leg.

    The stand up/sit down test, 37 times per minute is a bit more difficult, that's less than 2 seconds per rep, but got to 40 per 1 min 14 seconds,........ fekn hell, need to up my walking exercise time per day, been a bit slack on it lately due to the air pollution, so back to the exercycle in my room....fwkn lazy sometimes.

    Personally I think that a propensity to believe silly medical factoids from the Telegraph is as good an indicator of incipient dementia as any.

    I didn't try that one ... so I've just tried it. Yes, a stiffer test than the last one. My legs started feeling it at 20 but I managed to do 42 in a minute.

    Not so silly Bob, the tests and similar are used in martial arts training schools, balance being a key factor to effective and efficient movement.
    Balancing on one leg in different positions is a regular practice in my school.

    There's also a direct correlation between lack of oxygen and glucose through poor circulation and blood supply to the brain, and senility, alzheimer's or any other brain malfunction.

    Another good test is to sit down on the floor without using your arms as aids, leaning on nearby furniture etc to lower yourself. Then, stand upright again without using your arms to lever or pull yourself up using convenient furniture or by pushing a hand down on one knee to assist in standing.

    Those who can't do that should certainly look at their lifestyle, diet and exercise to see what needs adjusting to be able to increase the ability to sit and strand as so described.

    Using hand grips, resistance bands and brisk walking along with just a few reps at a time of push-ups, and squats helps heaps in quickly overcoming mild disability problems due to ageing. just a little at a time, repeated often and regularly, will surprise anyone with the results in just two weeks, particularly those living a more or less sedentary life.

    Nothing personal, just observation, advice from others and personal experience.

    If your legs are straining at 20, you're not doing enough full deep squats a day, so increase them from your probable comfortable 15 now, to 25 or 30, in increments of 5 extra per few days, you'll thank yourself for it.

    Also try half squats, arms out forward, hold for 10 seconds,...repeat ad lib.

    Damm you 2020 for increasing my English Vocabulary ... I had to Google palanquin (it appears the common spelling has 2 'a' s).

    I'm more used to be hoisted by my own Petard.

    Oh, if anyone's interested, I also passed the 20 sec test ... but wobbly initially on my right leg, but seemed to get better the longer I stood.

    Failed miserably though during the 'eyes closed' option.

    I stood on each leg for a minute with eyes open and then gave up due to it being unnecessary to continue.

    Did same with eyes shut and, each time, could feel my foot wobbling to compensate for the lost balance....but body stayed fairly steady.

    Having done Latin dance probably helped a lot...

    Rubbish.
    each time, could feel my foot wobbling to compensate for the lost balance....but body stayed fairly steady.
    Actually,.....no, the foot doesn't wobble, the leg does, and that leg wobbling isn't a compensatory reaction to lost balance, but results from disturbance of your perception that precedes the lost upper body balance, which has more to do with (a) being unable to see,(b) problems in the semi-circular canal of the inner ear and (c) your brain's "internal spatial orientation", the ability to visualize yourself in space, stronger in some than others.

    The body doesn't stay steady for long at all with eyes closed, the upper body starts to flounder first, before the uncontrollable leg wobble finally affects your upper body balance. Try standing on both legs, then close your eyes and see how hard it is to keep your balance that way.

    Compensation can only be achieved by either extending your arms to one side or another, swaying your body counter to the 'fall' sensation, or, with your back, neck and head held upright, holding the raised leg with or without your hands, closer to your centre of gravity, your "one point", in Aikido, or hara,just 2 inches below your navel, or simply by focussing your mind on that one point, hara.

    You also need to keep an upright position with your eyes focused straight ahead when doing the exercise with eyes open.

    You could not have stood on one leg with your eyes closed for a minute, either, statistically impossible, being twice as long as a teenager could, which would make you the first human to achieve such a feet.

    In which case, you'd better contact the Guinness book of records.

    Well, actually I can. And I just did it again to prove it to myself. A bit of a wobble but this can be overcome by leaning forward a tad and the foot compensates more easily.

    You are hardly an authority on these things, ENT. And I think that you have never even heard of Romberg.

    Like this?

    Or this;

    Or this;

    Or this;

    Or maybe more like this'

    Sorry, no one found that stood on one leg with their eyes for a whole minute.....

    You are hardly an authority on these things,
    Of course I'm not, but I still doubt your claim, as;

    "A strong relationship was found between advancing age and declining balance. Eyes open balance stays in the 40s range until age 50 then begins to drop by about 10 seconds for each decade after 60. Eyes closed balance is a third of the duration of eyes open balance and drops by about 4 seconds each decade after age 50. The average of 15 seconds with eyes closed for 18-39 an year old surprised me, it was much less than I had been taught."

    Detailed results are below, see how you compare.
    We found that the difference in UPST times is not gender specific but is related to age, with the eyes open condition always resulting in significantly longer UPST times than eyes

    I guess I have exceptionally good balance.
    Perhaps 14 years of Latin dance and those years spent doing yoga (even living in a yoga centre) when I was young have actually paid off.

    You certainly put a lot of effort into trolling, ENT. Bye bye, now.

    Me, trolling? Ha ha!
    You just can't stand stand your wild and woolly claims being examined in the light of normalcy, dolt.

    Your claim to be able to spend one minute doing a one legged 'blind' stand compares well with your previous claims to fame as a pioneering martial artist, high speed biker, intrepid mountaineer,multiple night-time swimmer of the Johor straits, valved car window operator, honours degree entry at 18 yoa, (when you couldn't even finish high school), to name but a few,........... Walter.

    The common factor in all your claims to fame is,....no reliable witnesses or verifiable references.
    And being a pathological liar, you empathise and support other's of your kind,....Fluke, for example and other sadistic morons you admire.
    All of you products of abusive early upbringings and relationships.

    No one in all honesty can make that claim, search for evidence as much as you like.

    Honestly, you should do your claimed one legged trick on camera and post on youtube or make your claim(s) to fame in the Guinness book of records,...think of the fame and fortune you'd garner,..you'd never have to work in the mouse factory again,,..wouldn't have to wait another 6 years (or more, the increasing likelihood as as Oz gov. OA pension funds dwindle) for your pension.

    Think about it.

    Meanwhile, which of the above videos comes closest to your attempts at the notorious, blind, one legged hop?
