What is interesting about these guys is how freely they will admit who they are and just flaunt it totally openly.
Last time I was in Ko Phangnan there was this white guy who was doing part time work at the hostel we were crashing at, and he would just openly steal shoes from other guests that they had left in the front lobby after they had come in from the previous evening. Then he would show you the shoes he stole, and for all he knew they very well could have been yours. Like it was nothing. Its astounding.

...in comparison to the bald-faced scams usually on offer at most local tourist locations, this one almost seems like a joke...I mean, how valuable are backpackers' shoes anyway? B100 to retrieve your flipflops?...Originally Posted by redhaze
LOL, this one.Originally Posted by cyrille
Just an example of the brazenness of it. And the arbitrary pettyness of how they operate. They will literally steal the shoes off your feet.Originally Posted by tomcat

After sunday I'll be on the lookout. It's now monkey new year season in Bangkok and the backpackers will probably all stay in for fear of getting water on their crusty sweaty bodies.
I'm well within my rights to stop and question their actions. Any smart arse tactics or witty replies are to be expected and I wonder how they'll feel about a supposed threat of police or the begging mafia being 'upset'
I wanna start moving their stuff about, cardboard sign, taking their earnings and handing them to a Thai 'beggar' or well.. we'll see what occurs
^nice one pat, looking forward to what occurs

Because its the biggest load of stinking un-wiped ass to 'congratulate' parents for not working the kids.Originally Posted by redhaze
I fucking hated it when I was a kid. Hated having to wash dishes on the weekends & getting paid under the table so I could buy my first car (87 Bronco fuck yeah).
Hated my parents not giving me cash for the weekend when other kids got cash for whatever. I had to do 'chores' or work for neighbors or both to be able to got to the movies or whatever.
I couldn't imagine a snowflake today not ever having a job for their entire lives until after college.
Or having a 'token' job that they don't really 'need' because your parents make you. You can quit at any time and don't learn a fuckin thing about working with others and dealing with life.
Fast forward to today and I'm thankful as hell my parents made me work and earn as a kid.
Jeezus These people have no pride to be begging on people that have no hope to earn the money these parasites could in the west if they get off there arse. I just hope I don't run into them male or female. Pond scum is the nicest thing I could think of.
Same here. My parents didn't hand me anything, ever. We were fairly poor when I was younger so that helped I suppose.Originally Posted by Slick
I never resented working, I always wanted to work. Always had a drive to earn my own money. I had a savings account when I was like 12, all of it money I earned from doing little odd jobs or whatever. Some of it saved from when my Grandparents would give me money on my birthday or whatever, so I suppose it wasn't all earned. I probably still have some of that money lmao.
Been working as long as I can remember. I agree man, its pretty soft to not work until after college. Don't think it really sets you up for a good future.
I used to go job hunting every school holiday and I could never understand going back to school and having to listen to the lazy fuckers who hadn't lifted a finger all spring/summer/winter whinging because they had no money for cigs and booze.
your understanding is correct, Red...wore the harness as a matter of habit for years...still reach for it sometimes in the morning...collecting the pay off now, which includes never seeing another suburb in my life...Originally Posted by redhaze

Not sure it counts but he puts in some long days.

I think the living allowance was meant to be £2400 pa back then plus by using a deed of covenant could add 20ish% tax rebate. They gave me £15 a week, posted weekly
I could never understand the resistance to student loans. The possibility of being able to borrow to go to uni with having to work 24+ hours a week would have made studying so mych eadier

When was it that you blew in from Fiji,..after Bainarama's coup in 2006 was it?
Or earlier, when most of Fiji's Indians did a runner to NZ, back in the 1990s? Or the 1980's?
