    Kicking Allah

They've only gone and done it again haven't they!

In a gesture to reach out to the community, the US imported a load of footballs for Afghani kids. Unfortunately they went for something brightly coloured, chose flags to signify unity, and included the Saudi flag, which happens to have one of the infinite names of allah on it.

A swarm of nearly 100 protesters took to the streets.

I guess that explains why we commonly see the peacelovers ritually burn the US and Israeli flags, but never the Saudi one. Well that clears that up then.

If you were to print, say, the Ten Commandments on a football plenty of Xtian's would be upset too.
If you stuck Moses revered image on a rugger ball, Golders Green would likewise be up in arms.

Well meaning, but dumb. Where do these people go to school?

    a quintessential keda thread.

    1. looking past the the obvious ignorance/cultural insensitivity of the donors
    2. blatantly inflating the significance of the protest--- a 'swarm' of 100 people! GASP! martha bar the door!

taken from the link in the OP
A spokeswoman for the US forces in Afghanistan said they made "significant efforts to work with local leaders, mullahs and elders to respect their culture" and distributing the footballs was an effort to give a gift the Afghan children would enjoy.
"Unfortunately," she added, "there was something on those footballs we didn't immediately understand to be offensive and we regret that as we do not want to offend."

Not quite as overt as a sword.
The cross for Christians is more of a symbol of self sacrifice and rebirth.

    ^

That's the civil ensign/flag of Switzerland, not the Christian cross.

^ you really are dense aren't you!
    It's a cross.

Last time I checked Switzerland was a rather neutral country.

It's the Swiss ensign/flag actually Earl. And not, as you mistakenly inferred:

And what does Switzerlands neutrality have to do with anything? Does that somehow lend creedence to your theory that the 'Christian cross is not as overt as a sword'... despite the fact you didn't post one. And I'm dense!?

Now that's something I didn't know, very interesting.

Anyway it's cross and represents a sovereign confederation of democratic states.

It's unlikely any Swiss citizens take offense to having their flag represented on a soccer ball.

The above is a Greek cross with arms of equal length. The standard Christian cross (or Latin cross) has a longer vertical arm divided by a horizontal arm above the middle, like the cross Jesus is said to have been crucified on.

Let me re-phrase that for you: If 'they' complain about something 'we' do, it's because 'they're' uncivilized/hypocritical/special-pleading/etc. If 'we' complain about something 'they' do, it's because 'they're' uncivilized/hypocritical/special-pleading/etc

Let me re-phrase that for you: Heads 'we' win, tails 'they' lose.

Righto. So what does any of that have to do with the Christian cross which is what you were arsing on about in the first place?

represents a sovereign confederation of democratic states
I think you mean "cantons". Switzerland doesn't have states.

Let me know if there is anything else you need explaining, it's my pleasure.

"There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet" great text to have on a football. Let's print the Holy Prayer on some bog role and distribute it for free in American trailer parks.
