    Marriage vows

I have just finished reading Mr. Commitment by Mark Gayle a fairly entertaining plane/train ride novel concerning a young man about town with commitment issues.
The main stumbling block between him and marriage seemed to be the church vows particularly “til death do us part”. The young man would have preferred 4 years with an option to renew.

This combined with the numerous references to marriage and relationships here got me to thinking.
What does drive commitment to a relationship?
Is marriage really necessary to achieve commitment? Does the fact that vows are exchanged make the couple more determined to see the relationship work.
In this day and age do people take vows seriously?

I have felt committed going into each of my serious relationships but so far none have lasted until death.

So what do the members believe keeps the relationship together, creates the commitment?

    Their vows?
The fact that they were married in some form of ceremony?
    The sex?
    The money?

    Or my favorite children.

I believe this more than any other reason keeps relationships together long after the honeymoon period has been consigned to history.

How seriously do people take their vows?

I didn't take any vows. Paid the money, got the stamp, had a party.
I think you're talking about the old fashioned Christian type wedding.

Flippo birds can't get divorced, which I guess means I have little to lose if I get hitched.
