What Have You Learnt With Age?

"It's all a load of old nonsense"

I don't mean that as a throwaway - This is what I feel I have learnt over my years. I'm 44 and the idea that 'my' life has ever had any real meaning outside of pathetic attempts to pass on my DNA have long since passed. It's not a depressing thought - I'm much relieved that's it's all nonsense. I now view life akin to walking through a rural carnival show.....sometimes laughing in merriment, sometimes crying in disbelief, maybe once in a while having a go on an exciting ride, enjoying it, and being sick afterwards. But at the end of the day the 'fun' will be over and it will be time for bed. That's okay.

What about you good folks? Have you found contentment with age; or have you carried your youthful hopefulness along with you through the passing of time.
Back off Margaret, you're on a sugar rush!

44 Eh? I must say you don't look it, you carry your age well.
One thng I have learnt over time and I am 15 years older than yourself, is that emotional maturity is over rated, never had it and I guess now never will.

When taking a piss.... If I don't piss on my hands

I don't have to wash them when finished!

Not philosophically important but a true time saver.

I have learnt that getting older sucks

The older you get the bigger the numbers that bar girls tell you get.

When I turned 50 a couple of years ago ..things seemed to change and the following things are now my mindset...that was not the case pre-50
and I would never have said :

Sex is not as important to me as it used to be

Money is not as important to me as it used to be...although I would obviously rarther have it than not

My health is more important than before, I never used to worry about it..now it consumes me.....self preservation and all that.

I don't crave "flash" cars anymore

You cant teach kids anything...they will always know it all till they have kids of their own...Lordy I have treid but have now given up.

I dont look in the mirror so much

I dont worry about my figure so much...you cannot fight with gravity.

I don't bother much with new clothes..the Wife spend my share !

I don't worry anymore that I have very little hair..so I shave whats left off

    My religiuos beleifs are stronger

    I DON'T WANT TO GET OLD......BUT I DON'T WANT TO DIE

Sad isn't it?......oh to be 30 again, but I dont wish for it as its just not possible..getting old gracefully..or disgarcefully..I'm not sure which really.

    Hear, hear to that.

Some excellent responses. It seems that many of worry less about the insignificant things in the world as we age. I certainly have a sense of my own mortality now....especially after reading MM's post. I'm not scared of death though....Only joking, of course I am.

I've learnt that at the age of 48 I'm getting too old to be doing things I don't like doing but still young enough to do things that I enjoy doing.

I've come to realize in the last couple of years that life is short, and I will be dead in about 35 years or so (last 30s now).

So, I try not to take life too seriously and I try to realize how lucky I"ve been overall, out of the 6+ billion people on this planet.

I do tend to be a minor worrier or trivial things.

I think this may be in my genes.

I have learned that I live on a planet and not on an island and that most on said planet are slaves to a way of life that is dictated to them by the media, religion, or fashion.

I am pleased that I was never accepted into that clique, now all I need to do is worry less, stop trying to prove how clever, right or talented I am and try to be content.

I will be 33 in June.

Well in about 60 days I will be 69 years young. What do I worry about? Nothing.

I have heard it said before, even on here, if you can't control it, don't worry about it. That's the way I live it.

Quite an odd attitude for a cop, or did this 'enlightenment' come about after retirement?

You've had enough time to perfect the art, but still have some way to go...
