    Thirty Years

I arrived for the first time in Thailand thirty years ago today. Here's my journal entry for that day:

    21 August 1977

Got up early to see the sunrise on Shwe Dagon Pagoda but the sun was not shining. At about 9:30 took the number 10 bus to the Pagoda and spent three hours walking around the beautiful area with its multitude of shrines. Caught the same bus back, packed, lunched and met the Irish at the Thamada Hotel. Took a taxi to the airport for the short flight to Bangkok. Arrived at about 6 local time and took the number 29 bus in to the railroad station near which I booked a small room with one bed at the Thai Song Creet hotel on Rama IV Road for 40 Baht. Had a nice pork curry and Coke supper for 7 Baht.

    interesting.

how long did you keep it up for? are you gonna post them day by day to keep up the 30 year milestone..... that would be a millennium thread methinks... (eat your heart out CMN)

I always found that journal entries of mine got somewhat mundane and staid, and thus gave up.

I would love to have been here 30 years ago, but at the age of three I doubt I would have got very far.

    Good stuff, BH

I really should have kept a diary. I have no idea what things cost me back then, except it was cheap.
Ko Samui in 1982 was very different to today, and whilst I am grateful to have been there, it also makes me scared to return now.

Richard Gere's pet, you would not be able to sleep on a sore knob unless you had taken severe measures to anaesthetise yourself.

    Care to expand?

Nice, BH. I think you still look happy, but now more content in many ways. I must get back to your pond-building thread. It makes me happy.

The photo of me in Samui that Wayne posted was taken at Ao Thong Ta Khian. I think it was 20 baht per night to stay there, including breakfast. I went back in 1989 and, of course, was totally shocked at the transformation. No desire to return there now.
