Where's the worst place you have lived or stayed?

Stayed in: In BKK the Crown Hotel, Soi Suk 29, many years ago.

Not sure if the place is still up or not. A bunch of us were there for a film shoot and we wanted to get down to the Bangkok seedy side of things. 2011 to be exact. Street Cowboy was not far off.

Asked for a room, back then they were going for around twenty dollars a day but nothing available so we got one of those whatever rooms. Full of mirrors, black walls and weird shit going on, just wanted to keep the camera equipment safe. Loose women knocking on the door and A/C no control. Fun.

Lived in: A small village outside Ankara when I was going around Europe and had a car accident. Lonely, isolated.

Saudi, Howdy Alabia may be paradise if your a gay muslim teetotal camelshagger, as I only tick 3/4 delighted to leave wallet sufficiently engorged to never darken their towels again.

I spent nearly three years in Egypt on a mobile crew. We worked from the Red Sea to the Libyan border. I got to see a lot of interesting things in my time there but working out of off road caravans got pretty tedious after the first year or so.

Funnily I spent nearly two years in Myanmar (’90 – ’92) in similar conditions but enjoyed every minute of it.

Guest house in Pak Bang with sewerage flooding the shower area, no power after 19.00 and mosquitoes like pigeons.

That was a few years ago and I know it's now a lot better, thank somebody.

Chungking Mansions HK would have to have a top prize sh*thole somewhere for a stay.

Regular police raids, drugs, triads, backpackers, prostitutes, illegal immis anything goes. Now everybody knows if you have no cash or friends don't go to HK expecting a cheap ride. So as the story goes.

Met a few friends for dinner one time, a few Filipinas and Cantonese, with the promise of the best Indian curry in town, sure I was up for that. Second floor of that place it was someone's apartment cooking up a storm. The place was awash with folks wanting to exchange US$ and stopping you along the way.

'Yeah dude on your way you Nigerian/Pakistani whatever scammer, the ATM is around the corner' I'm not a fooking American.

So we sit down and eat, the best dahl, curry, Tandoori chicken, all else included in the measely price, no complaint there. Half way through the meal a bang on the door. Everyone stopped eating and the raid was on wtf.

No issues with my visa but the girls were out the window and me along with them. One thing about HK is the amount of helpers ( live in maids) who do a little prostitution on the side, none of those in company but there was a crackdown back then.

Slid down a tarp and landed in a street sellers down below. Didn't break anything but they ran off except for one who was arrested we found out later. Crazy yes.

For a backpacker deal rooms would go for around 200, never been inside one but as a fire trap and a place full of nutters there's your place to crash.

The first year in Saudi was not too bad since I was living in a muslim free compound. Party every weekend. The second year sucked since I moved to a hospital that co-mingled muslims and westerners in the compound. They were all drama queens and loved to get westerners in trouble. Obviously I did not nenew that contract.

As I get older I think less of geography than state of mind. It's all a question of perspective.

If I had to nominate one place, Pattaya.

Seemed alright to me as a place to crash, left my luggage there & when I came back a few hours later, they'd let the room to someone else as well... refund after a bit af aggro and onto another floor. Clean & with private bathroom, hot water.

I stayed in worse places, as far as flea-ridden filthy rooms are concerned, India & the Philippines top my list.

    Totally agree, dirty horrid place.

Holyhead in Anglesey is easily the worst place on Earth but Wrexham is just " a pair of rails" behind it.

I stayed in a pub in Wrexham one night and had washed and was getting ready to go downstairs for a drink. There was knock on the door and the landlady introduced me to a lorry driver who was going to sleep in another bed in the room. Obviously a homosexual paradise but I made my excuses, packed and left.

The worst thing is that I ended up in Chester which is more expensive than Paris.

So David, you met a ticked off gay muslim teetotaling camelshagger, and that's only 3/4 of the story?

BTW, Listerine still doesn't remove the camel smell, even when applied liberally to all areas ...

After reading the stories here, maybe Angles City, Philippines isn't the ass end of the world ... but it seemed so ATT.
