I met a few Oirish down in Christchurch a few years back doing the rebuild. Now there's more work I guess they'll stay longer.

When did that happen? We have a long and dismal tradition of racism, intolerance, and bigotry. And the boffins are now telling us to expect even more up to 7.0 in the very near future.
Not to mention the main divide fault which is 50 years overdue, and will make the ones we have just had look like nothing.

So is there a mass exodus to Oz ,Fiji anywhere there's a flight or would folks sooner stay put?
I've been through a few earthquakes and the scary bit is the uncertainty, at least it'll discorage unwanted immigrant overstayers but bugger tourism and the huge infrastructure bill for such a small pop to shoulder

I would also like to explain why New Zealand will recover from this is they still have a North Island that's the most populated and the hub of industry.
It's the underpopulated South Island that's taking earthquakes.

Most people will stay here, roads and buildings will be fixed, some people living in kaikoura actually moved there from christchurch after the quakes there.

Had an aftershock tonight, 5.7 .. you get used to them.
you cannot stop nature..just have to live with it and adapt.
the cost to rebuild state highway 1 (main rd north) is put in the billions.
