At 3.30am, on the morning of October 5, Pattaya police were called to the scene for what appeared to be a mystery death in front of the Community Pharmacy Boonkanchana 10/9 Soi Watboonkanchanaram, Pattaya.

There Sawang Boriboon medics attended the body of fifty-six-year old German national, Mr Frank Butter, who was laying on the ground. He appeared to have been foaming at the mouth.

Medics estimated he had been dead for three-hours and there was no sign of any struggle, violence or injury.

Officers crucially discovered an asthma spray in his pocket and this was taken as evidence.

Thirty-one year old food vendor, Ms Kanchana Chomchuen, said that as she was preparing food she had seen Mr Butter hanging onto the railing as though he was drunk. She watched as he fell.

She assumed he was drunk and left him there. It was only when she was packing up for the night that she went across to try and wake him, only to realize he was dead.

Officers are assuming he had gone to the pharmacy to buy more asthma spray only to find it closed, had a seizure and died outside.

The body has been sent for autopsy to establish the cause of death.

To be honest I have walked over Farang bodies in broad daylight lying on the pavement in Ko Sang Rd BKK.
I assumed that they had passed out drunk and it was part of the backpacke experience was to lie passed out on the busy pavement .
But a German is different, they don't do that, but how are Thai vendors to know that, the difference between a drunk Yobbo and an upright German.

The smell ?

Thais don't get involved when someone's laying flat out on the ground usually. They'll just stand there and take photo's or call the emergency services as a rule. More likely to just take photo's.

the basic gut reaction of any human being when seeing another human being fall and then lie stretched out in front of them on the street would be to at least have a closer look and ascertain whether the person breathing or not.

it is certainly not too difficult to tell the difference between a corpse with foam around the mouth and a living breathing being. i wonder how many people passed by in the three hours.

being thailand, and in particular pattaya, the gut reaction of the thai when seeing a white foreigner stretched out on the street is to assume that they are drunk and mind ones own business.

somehow i just cant imagine this happening in any country outside of asia.

This is a likely scenario of what what might happen to a German who has practiced self abuse for most of his adult life.

Just assume...and look on....

There's a German near me who is almost constantly pissed. The street vendors know him well. If they saw him fall they would also assume that he was just drunk. Again.

Only Westerners have value and importance of any note.....

Homeless, alcos and junkies die on the streets of the west daily, they are invisible to the passing public.

I've attended calls, UK to move drunks etc from doorways, parks, parking lots, only to find a cold body.

3 piece suit and a brief case, people will stop, look like a down and out, people walk by, not their problem.

Working for extra £'s as a taxi driver in the 1970s i saw a drunk working his way through the taxi rank, every driver said no and locked the doors. When he got to me, well it was very quiet, he was well dressed so i took him. Before he gave me his full address he passed out in the front seat. I pulled over, found his wallet with a library card and money. I took him to the address on the card, helped myself to a fair but generous tip. I then dragged him up the walkway to his house, not being overly careful about his knees on the ground or his head as i propped himup against the porch. I rang the bell, a woman answered. I said i think this belongs to you and walked away.
Next day i get a call from the licensing officer, i am to report to the town hall asap.
On arrival i am astounded to be told the chap was the mayor of ***** and diabetic, i had possibly saved his life. Here is £50 reward !!!
His wife had been to the independents taxi rank looking for the driver that had picked him up.

So you never know why someone may be unsteady.

I remember being totally wankered about 5 in the morning stumbling out of walking street and sitting down for a minute and falling asleep
I woke up in a chair with a drink in front of me
They had carried me into the bar, they recognized me from another time
Quality tourist I am, at least they never left me outside
Had a great day watching the sun come up getting rotten drunk
