Thai cops making home visits to fill ‘invasive’ immigration forms.

Thai cops making home visits to fill ‘invasive’ immigration forms.

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau began formally asking foreigners who live in the country to provide their bank account numbers as well as information about their social media use and places they often visit.

THREE foreigners living in Thailand have complained of receiving visits by policemen asking them to furnish personal details, purportedly as part of a controversial immigration policy mooted by the authorities for national security reasons.

According to Thaivisa.com, the three foreigners residing in the northern province of Chiang Mai were visited at home by the uniformed officials who asked them to provide details like their monthly income, height, weight, and even skin color.

The three, said Thaivisa, wrote about the visits and posted their accounts in the website forum. They claimed that they were asked to provide the details in the ‘Personal Information’ form from the ‘Transnational Crime Coordination Unit Region 5 (TCCU R5).

Other details requested in the form included the nationality of parents, current address, name of spouse and date of marriage, along with details on their children.

The ‘Personal Appearance’ section of the form, on the other hand, asked for height, weight, skin colour, hair colour and details of any scars, the website reported.

A user identified as jak2002003 said the visiting officer had provided a form with incorrect details.

“Problem was the name on mine was not me…. and the address house number was wrong,” the user was quoted as saying.

“So I told them I did not want to fill it in. The head man came to take it back the next day.. and told me he has been told that the government has told all the head men to get this information form any Farangs living in their village.”

SEE ALSO: Thailand: Foreigners vexed by ‘intrusive’ immigration forms

The user said the form asked for details that were “too personal”, adding the Immigration office had already asked details about frequent hangouts and that the information was already provided during the user’s last entry into the kingdom.

“What’s going on? Next will be having to report to the village headman and immigration every 90 days?” the user asked.

“And why do we have to fill the information 90 day forms out AND this new one AND this home delivered police one… ALL with the SAME information on them… EVERY TIME we go to do 90 day or visa renewal (SIC)?. Seems crazy.”

SEE ALSO: Thailand asking foreigners for bank account, social media, and hangout details

It was not immediately clear whether the police officers were acting upon instruction or whether the move would be imposed on all other foreigners living in the province and country.

In April, Thailand’s Immigration Bureau began formally asking foreigners who live in the country to provide their bank account numbers as well as information about their social media use and places they often visit.

The government justified the controversial move on grounds of national security, citing concerns about terrorism. The new, seemingly intrusive request is likely to face stiff resistance from Thailand’s large expatriate community, which had previously faced leaks of their personal information.

Many foreigners are also said to be reluctant to share their private information with Thai authorities due to reservations over how securely their details would be kept. It was only in March when a couple of online data leaks revealed foreigners’ sensitive information.

For a start there are now no forms to fill in for a 90 day report, hand over the passport, it is scanned the new bit of paper stapled in and out of there in minutes.

Immigration has never asked me for any of that. Could it be that the three are not telling the whole truth, possibly come to the attention of the cops for some reason.

I was given this form to complete at my last 90 day report. It was 3 pages of recycled A4 paper with other expats details on the back, including passport photos and personal info.
I completed it using only info they already hold for me. The rest, I left blank. My local office does not seem to be taking it seriously at all, but do not seem too concerned about individuals personal ID being compromised by their fuckwittery.

Did my 90 day border run on Monday. The only problem I had was on the Malay side where they forced me to buy, for 20 ringit, a card, which they scanned, and then I never used again. I don't know the point of it.
No forms to fill out upon return to Thailand (except the normal arrival card).

These "official" forms asking for personal details should be questioned rigorously, and certainly no headman of any village should be collecting them.

    ^^ 90 day border run?

But you're working in Thailand. Illegally?

These types of forms are being asked for at some immigration offices when reporting while under an extension of temporary stay.

This house to house lark is the brain child of a certain female, CM immigration officer.

According to Tod, on another thread, the form is supplied at immigration and only questions 2.1 and 2.3.1 are compulsory.

Local cops are supposed to keep records of aliens living in their area, nothing to do with immigration.
I live in border solider/police area, not BIB, but green uniforms, everyday my children go to school and we have to pass a police/army check point at the main road.

About 8 weeks ago the cops said they wanted to get some information and would drop in sometime to get it.

They came one day with a Thai form, that they filled out and took pictures of me, my visa and passport, plus emergency contact details in Australia.

Know every cop out here, get stopped every time we go on the main road, so ask why the sudden interest.

They are supposed to keep emergency contact details locally, encase of death, serious injury.

As there were only 2 stupid farangs out here, they never bothered, one died, natural causes, but the cops couldn't find his passport.
He was here on a different passport, then his nationality, I'm Australian, but have used my UK passport at times.

Local cops had the wrong info, so the wrong country was informed.

It came about, as I recall, when some welsh bint got murdered down on one of the islands some 7-9 years ago. They had trouble identifying her.

Jim, don't you get the Forestry Police in your area? The ones that wear black?

I never go to do that 90 day thing. My secretary either does it online (when/if that's working) or goes for me. Thankfully by the looks, fucked if I want to be handing over my bank account details!

Correct Norts, but nope this is the first I've heard about any of it.

Purely speculation but from the article it sounds like it may be provincial CM?

I recently completed my 90 day report at Chonburi immigration office in Jomtien but was not asked to complete any new data form. I was half expecting to be handed it given the experiences of others elsewhere over the past 6 months but evidently it is not part of any process down here.

Err, many immigration offices here in Thailand, and the world for that matter, want bank details and copy current statements of accounts when one applies for an extension of leave to remain. Indeed, most non immigrant visa applications are dependent upon such evidence and I believe the new MEV is no exception.

But, folk really should remind themselves that in living here in the LoS we are not subject to any meaningful rule of law but are merely at the mercy of the diktat of a third world dictatorship denoted by whimsy, incompetence and illogicality sprinkled with a fair dose of jingoistic fervour and a fine seasoning of inherent xenophobia.

Nothing they do really matters very much not least because whatever they think they want usually changes or is forgotten about.

I don't recall being asked for or supplying bank account details for any visa or WP application/process previously. Granted, it may have got buried somewhere in the deluge of paperwork that was supplied though.

I've lived and worked in 46 countries and never been asked, if your employed tax taken at source in many countries including here as for xenophobia have you actually worked in LOS ?, compared to Australia China Czech Republic and Ireland I find Thais not so much accepting as ignoring anything that doesnt't fit , a great facet of life in theway we all live surrounded by nitrogen but ignore.

Petty bureaucrats and jobsworths are the same the world over, I laugh when I read folks have the hassle to clock in every 90 days the poor sods there on a tenner a day have to sit all day in those drabs grey caves with only office juniors in tight skirts and at my office a photo fo the departed leader to cheer em up

Retirement extensions based on lump sums require copies of up-to-date bank books. Some offices require these even when the application is based on income levels confirmed by the embassy. Extensions as the spouse of a Thai national require bank evidence if reliant upon the lump sum route.

MEV requires evidence of income supported by bank account details.

Applying for a UK Non-Immigrant O at the London embassy requires evidence of funds and their passage through a bank account.

Did my last 90 day report (Phuket) in July, and the process had gone from passport only, no copies (only last notification slip), to requiring copy of passport main page. From what I understand now, the 90 day notification now requires copy of passport, completed information form, and photo. Will find out in October.

My last retirement extension in August did require the completion of the information form (which I mostly left blank). Another change was that where there was once the requirement for a copy of an ATM card, which then became a copy of the main/front page of a bank book, they required a copy of the last balance page also (this in spite of using the income method). I also understand that now they require photos of the applicant outside their home, with the house number clearly visible.

Just renewed my visa (and work permit). Was handed the form to complete in Immigration. Filled in some bits, left most blank and handed it back in. Officer did not even look at it, shoved it at the bottom of the pile of paperwork and issued the visa.

When I do my next 90 day report, maybe the 3 page proforma on recycled A4 paper will have your bank details on it?

That's right. And on weekends I go to Malaysia and smuggle back drugs.
I also have a body in my freezer, and I run a protection racket and string of brothels. I'll give you a free two hours if you visit one, just give me a heads up so I can tell the staff.
