A man has captured the moment two young pickpockets slipped his girlfriend’s watch from her wrist as she posed for a photograph with them at a Thai temple.

The man posted an image to Reddit of the two young girls wearing brightly coloured traditional Thai costumes holding his girlfriend’s arm earlier this month outside Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, a province in Thailand’s north, on Sunday night.

The woman, who has not been named, smiled as one of the cunning thieves gently unclasped her wrist watch while her partner captured a photograph, with the travelling couple only noticing once they reviewed their holiday snapshots.

‘This pic solved the mystery of the missing watch,’ he wrote, conceding the pair had a bit to drink before going to the temple.

Thousands of people commented on the thread, with some Reddit users sharing their own pictures of the two girls from their own trips.

‘I’ve seen those little thieves before,’ one man wrote. ‘Adorable, adorable thieves. I didn’t suspect a thing when I saw them,’ said another.

‘I’ve seen those little thieves before,’ one man wrote. ‘Adorable, adorable thieves. I didn’t suspect a thing when I saw them,’ said another.

One reddit user said the girls must be the ‘two most popular child thieves in all of Asia’, while another observed there were around six girls in the same outfit and guessed they could be an ‘organised gang’.

One tourist said he must have dodged a bullet as he decided made the last minute decision not to have a photograph with the pair.

‘Holy c**p! I was tempted to ask for a photo with them when we saw them at the temple but didn’t want to be ‘that tourist’ and was also worried that their momager, who was lingering around, might scream at me for money if I went near them.’

Some commented on their pick pocketing style, noting they touched their target in several places so she didn’t notice her watch being snatched.

‘Notice how the thief is touching her hand in several places? It’s a pickpocket technique so that the mark gets accustomed to being touched by the thief and stops registering all of the touches.’

While others said the girls were likely poor and were stealing to make a living for their family.
‘A thousand plus people visit that site daily. I’m pretty sure those girls are dressed up to simply take pictures with tourists for tips. It’s probably the family’s income.’

Distraction and opportunity the keys to a good pickpocket. " Beware Pickpockets About!!" You think this would be a good thing, as it warns you. But the pickpocket is so happy to see that sign. 90% of people will touch or look where their wallet is upon seeing that sign. Little shits watch and go for it!.

One of my Thai clients lost a phone on a visit to China like that.
Mobbed by a bunch of cute little girls on the street couldn't help himself but pose for a photo taken by his colleague. After they had quickly scampered of he noticed his phone was gone.

I should imagine the PM getting involved in this when it goes viral.
If it is a troll story then it's very cruel.

Thais wouldn't stoop so low, it is plain to see that those pickpockets are not Thai but the Burmese hill tribe.

Pint sized pickpockets not guilty says their mum

They never beg for money... It always depends on how much the tourists want to give them.'

The parents of the tiny Thai ‘pickpockets’ allegedly pictured stealing a tourist’s watch on the steps of one of the country’s most famous temples have protested their daughters’ innocence.

A picture of the two girls, aged seven and ten, went round the world after a Reddit user claimed it captured one of the girls in the act on the steps of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai.

Now the parents of the girls have insisted they are not thieves, and simply ask for money to have their picture taken, telling police: ‘They never beg for money… It always depends on how much the tourists want to give them.’

Parents Phujarat Jiraphakorn and Lulu Laowa are said to have been furious after police called them in for questioning and threatened to press charges if the foreign couple were still in the country, local media reported.

Reddit user Medardboss shared a picture of an unnamed woman posing with the girls, dressed in traditional garb, alongside the caption: ‘Girlfriend in the progress of having her watch stolen.’

The post and the account has since been removed.

The parents said they grilled their girls after the photo, which was ‘upvoted’ to Reddit’s front page, went viral – but they protested their innocence.

The mother said she did not see how it would be possible for her girl to slip a watch from the woman’s wrist without her noticing.

Village elder Methaphan Fuengfukitchakarn travelled with them to the police station to attest to the family’s good reputation, Khaosod English reported.

‘Adorable’ Thai thieves caught robbing a tourist at temple

He said the family are well known and respected in the community and judging the girls based on one photo was unfair.

Police chief Anek Chaiwong told the website: ‘The farang [tourists] did not file any complaint to us.

‘The parents of the kids are very concerned and said they would have filed a complaint against the false accusation were the farang still here in Thailand.’

Medardboss, whose account has since been shut down, claimed that he and his so-called girlfriend only noticed the moment she was robbed while browsing through their holiday snaps at home.

He posted the picture to the MildlyInteresting thread and claimed they later found the watch.

Thousands of people commented on the thread, with some Reddit users sharing their own pictures of the two girls from their own trips.

‘I’ve seen those little thieves before,’ one man wrote, while another said: ‘Adorable, adorable thieves. I didn’t suspect a thing when I saw them.’

So they found the watch? What pillocks. Accusing those little girls.

If i was that woman, in the OP, i'd be more concerned about walking around in any country in the World with my hand bag wide open - much easier for pickpockets to get in there than for a wee girl to try and take a watch.

Or don't go out with a watch on. Or wear a bum bag!! Or a rucksack.

So no report was filed by the couple at any Thai Police station? The BIB just pulled in the family for questioning, because they saw a viral piece on Social Media. Which is quite possibly completely made up for all anyone knows.

    Amateurs.

^ those girls may be traditional models for a while, but when they get a little older they will retire as their daughters will take over the family business.
Watch this publicity will only promote their photographic enterprise, watch as tourists flock for a FB pic with the pair.

Do they do boy outfits? Or perhaps living with the ladyboy may change him...

Myself, as a tourist - I would get my piccie taken with the little girls. My bad. I have had my pic taken cuddling a monkey. My bad. And of me with a little girl selling me flowers - my bad. I give money for that. Is that so bad? And me not knowing a damn thing about currencies. I probably give too much, is that so bad..? Helping out a family.

In some sort of odd way, i would have liked to have had my pic taken with a tiger - my bad.

Baby elephants - why the hell not!! I did get snuffled by one once - when they still roamed Bangkok. I bought a banana. My bad.

I drew the line at having one of those horrible lizard things on my sholder.

    It's what tourists do.

You lot have to balance out what you, as residents, do in those situations. And what tourists do.

Still nasty what that couple did. Especially, that it has gone worldwide - and that family will suffer because of it. They should send some money to excuse themselves.

Last time my mother came here I took her on a canal tour of the BKK canals etc.

She was big and happy waving to the teenage monks on the banks of the river as if she's the first Westerner they've ever seen.

Not to compare you to my mother, of course.

    Bollocks to that.

I was living in CM in 2006 and was getting True installed.

I went up to Doi Pui (the hilltribe village just past doi suthep) every single house had a brand new pick up and True satellite dish on the roof.

The poor Thais eh. Let's give them money.

British tabloids apologize to hilltribe girls for theft allegations

CHIANG MAI, 21 March 2017 (NNT) – British tabloids have sent notes of apologies to the family of two northern hilltribe girls which they earlier accused of stealing items from tourists in their online articles.

Chiang Mai provincial governor Pawin Chamniprasert, alongside Honorary Consul of the British Consulate in Chiang Mai Ben Robert Svasti, delivered the notes of apologies from The Sun, Daily Mail, The Telegraph, and Daily Express in the United Kingdom and Australia to the family of the two Hmong girls.

The two girls were accused of stealing a watch from a British tourist while visiting Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai. The article went public in October 2016, and has since affected the Hmong family and the tourism image of the province.

It was later revealed after an investigation that the tourist in the article had not lost her watch. The four tabloids have then edited the article to show it was such groundless allegations.

The affected family has revealed after receiving the apology letters that they are grateful for the gesture and that the truth has been verified, and that they have been teaching their children to be good and honest people despite their poor status.
